In Search of The Wandering Wrestler

Just who is this masked man? Is that even a mask? Is there really such a place as Panda Island and if so is the wandering pro-wrestler Pandaman really its ruler?! DOES ANY OF IT EVEN MATTER????

Pandman was a character created by Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece, in 1998 for submission to a Kinnikuman character design contest, "The New Superhuman" to which artists submitted character designs for wrestlers. Oda created the character Pandaman as an 'Evil Superhuman' to be included in the popular comic by Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada. December 16th 1998 was the original release of this comic, "Kinnikuman The 77 Mysteries" (seen at left) and I do not have a copy of it so I am unaware of what role, if any, Pandaman, listed as 'Entry #12', had in it. The following is Oda's official profile for him from One Piece Vol.7 Chapter 56's SBS:

Pandaman Profile

Name: Pandaman
Birthplace: Tibet
Age: Even he doesn't know
Height: 200cm
Weight: 122kg
Super Human Strength Level: If he eats bamboo 3,300,000. Before eating it 3,300,000.
Killer Moves: S.P.D. (Sasanoha Panda Doroppu) "Bamboo Leaf Panda Drop", Giant Panda Deathlock, Panda Brain Kick [video game only], Panda Head Butt [video game only], Panda Cossack [video game only].

Oda's notes read as follows:

As a baby he, he was discarded in a bamboo grove and thus raised by pandas. "I have seen Princess Kaguya.", is what he often tells people, but no one believes him and they rough him up in return, this fuels his desire to become a stronger Super Demonic Villain.

As a joke character who has appeared in seemingly impossible places for any real canon character, it is highly likely that the Pandaman we have seen thus far is NOT part of the real story and is simply an easter egg. This notion is furher emphasized by his physical anatomy, and even state of life, changing in impossible ways throughout his various appearances. Furthermore, Oda has been liberal with the presentation of Pandaman, varying his physical appearance seemingly at whim. While the detailed picture of him above is often considered his 'real' form, Oda has drawn him in a number of forms depending on where he appears. For instance, while the hidden Pandaman in the comic has remained reasonably consistent, the Pandaman often featured on the back covers (and occassional front cover) of volumes goes through radical changes, sometimes as quickly as one volume. For examples see images below for Volumes 51 and 52 where his body and head are clearly different. Sometimes Pandaman appears to be a cartoonish panda-headed human-like figure, elsewhere he appears to be a powerful wrestler and sometimes he even seems to be a man wearing what's clearly a panda mask.

That's not to say there won't be a canon Pandaman character in the story someday. Luffy suggested in the data book RED, that he heard stories in a bar about a Panda Island and its ruler who was also a pro-wrestler. This agrees with the information Oda presented in an SBS (Volume 21 Chapter 202) that suggests Pandaman once lived on an island where he was a man of some status but was constantly being chased by a certain someone or something(s). Furthermore this data seems to support the debut of Tomato Gang, (Volume 27 Chapter 249 SBS) 38-years old and a debt collector from whom Pandaman is said to be running from. Unable to catch Pandaman, Tomato Gang resorted to hiring Unforgivable Mask to catch him. Unforgivable Mask is Pandaman's rival and has thus far made one unsuccessful attempt at capturing him.

While Pandaman seems to be enjoying his adventures within the pages of the comic, he also carries out amusing episodes on the cover of comic volumes. If you're not interested in reading the details of his adventures and would prefer to find them by yourself, please stop reading this paragraph. Pandaman first appeared on the cover of Volume 15 underneath the glossy paper wrapping. Since then he continued to make a few hidden appearances on covers until Volume 25 when he began to appear on the back cover as a serial easter egg. Pandaman interacts with and explores the world map on the back cover. Since Volume 38, the continuity of his adventures on the back cover seem to carry over to the front cover since after being eaten by a fish and vanishing from the back cover of two consecutive volumes, it was eventually revealed on the hidden front cover of Volume 38 that he was exploring the ocean floor. After this, Pandaman returned to the back cover where he continued his journey around the map. Since then he has come across a number of similar easter egg characters, mostly derived from sketches of doodles found in Oda's early work. The front cover of Volume 52 displayed a scene where Pandaman was portrayed with an entire group of such characters, including some not yet officially or publicly named by Oda. Where Pandaman's adventures will take him, no one can say for sure.

Pandaman's standings in past character popularity rankings are as follows:

Related Characters

Here are the hidden characters that have crossed pathes with Pandaman at one time or another in order of appearance in the comic. Please note, this is not a complete list of so-called 'easter egg' characters in One Piece. I will address those elsewhere some other time.

Name

Description

Domo-kun

Domo-kun is a character that Oda conceived of while still in high school. He's an alien plotting to overthrow Earth with his friend and fellow alien, Nnkay-kun. Domo-kun made his first appearance alongside Nnkay-kun in 'God's Present of the Future' included in Oda's collection of shorts, WANTED! In the short story there is a UFO that crashes before the pair show up and it's possible Domo-kun and Nnkay-kun were riding in it. Incidentally, the UFO that Nnkay-kun can be seen riding on the hidden back covers of Volumes 53 and 54 is extremely similar to the UFO seen in the above mentioned short. Domo-kun first appeared early on in the actual comic in Volume 2 Chapter 9 page 13 and received a profile in the data book BLUE which was further expanded upon in the SBS from Volume 31 Chapter 293.

Tomato Gang

The debt collector chasing Pandaman. He tirelessly pursues Pandaman and always appears to be holding a gun which is probably just a seaweed and rice roll. Oda has hinted that Tomato Gang might be chasing him too.

Nnkay-kun

Domo-kun's friend and fellow alien working with him towards conquering Earth. Nnkay-kun was first mentioned in the data book BLUE in Domo-kun's profile but was not seen in One Piece until the SBS from Volume 31 Chapter 293. Similar to Pandaman, there doesn't seem to be much consistancy applied to Nnkay-kun's design. While on the hidden cover of Volume 52 he appears to be roughly the size of Pandaman's head, on the hidden back cover of Volume 53 he appears to be significantly larger.

Unforgivable Mask

Pandaman's rival hired by Tomato Gang to assist in apprehending the elusive wrestler. Unforgivable Mask's Japanese name is 'Yurusumaji' Mask which can mean intolerable or unforgivable.

Pandawomanmi

Pandawomanmi is Pandaman's female counterpart suggesting there may be some truth to the Panda Island rumors Luffy heard. She was first glimpsed during the Island of Women storyline but Oda did not clearly establish her as a character separate from Pandaman until the hidden cover of Volume 52 which, although sequentially BEFORE the Island of Woman storyline in terms of volumes, was after Pandawomanmi's first appearance in the weekly publication.

Pandawomanmi's name is a mouthful but it's the best localization I can come up with and believe me I tried a variety of options. I wanted to split her name up to Panda Womanmi so it wouldn't be such a mouthful but Pandaman is clearly one word so I figured I'd follow Oda's example. Furthermore, the often ignored final syllable in her name, written in kanji, is important as it adds a Japanese essence to the character whose name is otherwise written in katakana. The kanji means 'beauty' and is a common ending for female names. It's very possible Oda borrowed a female pro-wrestler's name for inspiration but if so it isn't clear yet.

????

The creepy sun-like character(?) on the hidden cover of Volume 52.

????

A bear from the hidden cover of Volume 52. He appears similar if not identical to the bear-like animal from Longring Longland.

????

What appears to be a segmented bug from the hidden cover of Volume 52. It's very possible this is another one of Oda's old sketches.

????

What appears to be a male figure being shoved by Pandawomanmi on the hidden cover of Volume 52. While the origin of the figure seems to be based on some cross between Japanese armor and Okinawan designs, the character's name and origins have yet to be revealed.

The Kinnikuman Connection

Whether by coincidence or if Oda intended it to be as such, there was actually a Pandaman in the original Kinnikuman comic. He appeared in the first published volume of Kinnikuman as a performer in a suit. Kinnikuman thought that he was a real superhuman and tried to battle him, but all poor Pandaman wanted to do was run away. Alas, even as he tried to wave his hands in front of him to defend himself, Kinnikuman thought Pandaman was performing the special move, 'Kinniku Flash'. The would-be hero defeated Pandaman with his 'Kinniku Special' move. The pictures you see here are the original Pandaman action figure (he was figure #114) and the character from the comic who first officially appeared in Kinnikuman Vol.1 page 157. I do not know much about Kinnikuman beyond the little pink action figures that I played with as a kid growing up in the 1980's. What I do know, is that Pandaman is actually a playable character in the Kinnikuman video game for Game Cube, Kinnukuman Generation II: New Generation VS Legends. To obtain Pandaman simply beat the story mode with Kinkotsu Man (Bone Cold to US fans) in order to unlock Pandaman in Versus and Tournament modes. Getting Kinkotsu requires obtaining 300 plastic figures.

Most recently, Pandaman has appeared as a hidden character in Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy for Playstation 2. He is the 10th hidden character. Fellow OP fan Darsh of the Kaizoku Fansubs Message Board has allowed me to use a screenshot he took of Pandaman from the actual game.

Finding Pandaman in One Piece Manga

This guide is simply for locating the hidden Pandaman drawings [with the exception of Volume 7 page 68]. There are plenty more appearances of Pandaman in the comics, but they are not "hidden". They may be part of fan art, reproduced images of his hidden locations or even his character portrait for popularity rankings. These are the locations Pandaman was not intended to be easily found in. Some of his appearances are humorous and even surprising. I suggest you try to look for him on your own as well. As much fun as I'm sure Oda has hiding him, it's just as fun to skim a chapter under a microscope for any signs of Pandaman's tell-tale ears or trademark V-sign poses.

I have also made mention of when Pandaman is together with Tomato Gang or another one of the characters he frequently appears with.

As For The Rest?

Pandaman is everywhere. Seriously. It is ridiculous to see all the places he has invaded. I cannot possibly find them all myself because I do not have the resources, for instance he has even been on Japanese commercials. In that event, if anyone would like to submit their Pandaman findings, that would be super! You can always contact me at tsujimania@hotmail.com Other than that, I'll simply be adding my Pandaman findings here in no particular order.

Pandaman Invades the World

  • One Piece TV Animation Opening #1: "We Are". He is among the rogues that Zoro fends off with his swords.

  • One Piece Grand Battle! for Sony Playstation. Pandaman seen here is a hidden character. Obtain him by winning Event Mode and pressing Circle, Circle, X, Triangle, Triangle, Square. Should you input the code correctly you will hear "Paaaandaaa".

  • One Piece Grand Battle 2 for Sony Playstation. Defeat Crocodile and then clear Event Battle Mode with Mr. 2.

  • One Piece Treasure Battle! for Nintendo Game Cube. Complete the "Flying Kaloo" bonus game to unlock Pandaman as an assistant in battle. To unlock the bonus game, you need Deck 16 which is composed of: 202, 221, 255 & 251. Pandaman also faces off against Usopp in Deck 13's bonus game.

  • One Piece Grand Battle 3! for Nintendo Game Cube and Playstation 2. Pandman's G.P.D. wrestling move is accessible as a secret super move of Bon Kurei. Pandman is also hidden in the background of various stages. This FAQ has a complete listing of Pandman's locations in the game.

  • Pandaman has appeared in over 19 One Piece-related videogame titles on systems that range from the Wonderswan to arcade.

  • Pandaman has appeared througout the animated television series and in a number of One Piece films but perhaps his most interesting animated easter egg can be found in One Piece Movie 9 where his bounty poster is glimpsed. According the the poster his bounty is 3,333,333 Belly.

  • As seen at right, not satisfied by popping in and out of One Piece alone, Pandaman even showed up for a panel in the Akira Toriyama x Oda Eiichiro collaborative comic, Cross Epoch.

  • Pandaman may also be found here in the special comic Straw Hat Theater: Senior Class 'Sea' originally included with the publication 10th Treasures.
