'The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter' aka Kaguya Hime

Long, long ago, there lived an old man and woman who earned their living by weaving baskets and other decorative items from bamboo the man personally cut and gathered.

One day the man came upon a bamboo trunk glowing from within. When he cut it down, to his surprise he discovered a little girl inside. He took the girl home, and he and his wife raised her as their own. From that forward, the old man found precious coins in all the bamboo that he cut. And so, he and his wife became very wealthy.

After only three months, the girl had grown into a beautiful maiden and the couple named her Kaguya hime, the radiant princess.

As expected, Kaguya hime had many suitors and among them were five noblemen who were particularly persistent. The princess agreed that she would give herself in marraige to the man who brought her what she requested. But her demands were seemingly impossible to ever find on Earth. Items such as a tree with silver roots, golden branches and dragon balls seemed too obscure or too dangerous to attempt retrieving. In the end, all five suitors failed.

When the Emperor eventually learned of Kaguya hime, he requested that her father bring the maiden to his court, however, she simply refused to go. "I am not a human being," said the princess, "I cannot grant his request...I will die if I am forced to do so."

Three years later, Kaguya hime sadly revealed her true self to the old man and his wife, "I am from the moon. I have been expelled because of a 'sin' I committed in my previous life. Now it is time to return."

The Emperor heard of this and sent 2,000 warriors to prevent Kaguya hime from leaving, but they were frozen when moon people appeared on August 15th, the night of a full moon, to take the princess away.

Her eyes over-flowing with tears, Kaguya hime expressed her gratitude to her earthly parents and left a gift for the Emperor. It was a pouch that contained the medicine of immortality. And so she ascended to the stars, accompanied by the people of the Moon.

The Emperor received the medicine but he thought it was useless to live forever without Kaguya hime. He told the crown prince to burn the medicine on the top of the highest mountain in the country. Since then, this mountain has been called this mountain, Fuji.

There are actually several versions of this myth, some are more action-oriented and some are quite political, but this is perhaps the most famous and well-known version of the tale. If you're interested in those, please check the links at the end of this page. Otherwise, I hope you see the connection/gag here between Kaguya and Pandaman now.
