History of Nami

Bellemere was probably never a weak woman. She left her hometown of Cocoyashi Village in East Blue and became a Marine. Although the circumstances surrounding how she became a Marine, where she went and what she saw are unknown, none of those events are what we should focus on here. What is important to our story is the day she found two orphans in the aftermath of a terrible battle led by an unknown force that devastated a village. In the hellish aftermath, Bellemere found a 3 year-old girl wandering around clutching a baby girl just barely over a year old. Bellemere asked the girl if the baby was her sister but she wasn't. Amidst the stench of death and destruction surrounding them the little baby was laughing, the single sign of hope in an otherwise hopeless wasteland. Bellemere decided to take the girls with her and return to Cocoyashi village, leaving her life as a Marine behind.

The night they made it back to the village, their rising fevers only made travelling through a ferocious storm even more unbearable. On the verge of death they reached the village and were immediately given care and attention by the village doctor. After a short time the all three had recovered but the village spokesman, Genzo, came to talk with Bellemere about relinquishing the children. He suggested that she hand them over to the government, but Bellemere refused to do that. She wanted to keep the children and raise them on her own, molding them into women that could stand up on their own in a troubled world. Much to the chagrin of the village, Bellemere kept the children and never officially registered them as citizens. Whether the names given them were bestowed by Bellemere or not is unclear, but to the village they were known as Nojiko and her younger 'sister' Nami.

And so the girls grew up, raised on the outskirts of Cocoyashi village under the wing of the chain-smoking, mikan-growing, iron-willed woman Bellemere. Nojiko and Nami, although good children at heart, were always stealing items from the village causing trouble. Nami had a passion for studying navigation and cartography so she stole books on them from the library. By the age of ten, she proudly exclaimed that her greatest ambition was to make a detailed map of the entire world by herself. Unfortunately for her, Nami was not as skilled as her big 'sister' in shop-lifting and was often caught by Genzo. Genzo loved little Nami, but he always reprimanded her with a sharp tongue. Whenever he hauled her in he would lecture Bellemere (or attempt to) on how to raise her 'daughters' but she never listened and usually ended up embarrassing Genzo away by offering herself to make up for the trouble.

The truth was, Bellemere was very poor and wanted more than anything to give her adopted children good lives. Nami and Nojiko began to notice that Bellemere never ate food with them anymore and survived off of mikans alone. Although young, the two girls realized that Bellemere was sacrificing eating normal food so that the two of them could eat well. When they confronted her about it, she laughed it off and told them she was on an orange diet, but the yellowing of her skin told them different. Nami grew angry with her 'mom' and told her that she would be better off without raising the two of them. Bellemere grew furious at her remarks then smacked Nami and kicked her out of the house, screaming that she never wanted to see her again. Nojiko remained and calmed down her 'mom', but Bellemere already realized that her harsh words, even as she was saying them, were not true and her actions were wrong. In order to make up for her mistake she began to cook a great feast for the three of them using a significant portion of money she had saved up. She asked Nojiko to go out and bring her little 'sister' back.

Nami walked to the center of Cocoyashi village and met with Genzo. She explained to him what had just transpired and told him that she had run away from home because Bellemere would be better off without her. Genzo listened intently to her and then related the true events of how she had been found by Bellemere. To that point, Nami had been told she was found underneath a bridge. The story made Nami realize just how much Bellemere really loved her and just as he finished speaking, Nojiko showed up and asked her to come home. Genzo sent the little girl off and just when everything seemed perfect, when it appeared that the argument’s wounds had been set to heal, a cry went out from the village people, “PIRAAAAATES!”

Arlong, a Sawfish-type Fishman, a former subordinate of the greatest and most powerful Fishman Pirate Jinbeh, had recently left Grand Line with his sights set on conquering East Blue. Evidently the rumor was true. He and his crew landed at Cocoyashi village intent on setting up their base of operations there. Arlong announced his presence to the town and began to do some 'fund-raising' for his goal. His deal ran as follows: anyone wishing to live had to pay Arlong to spare his or her life. Adults’ lives cost 100,000 Belly and children’s were 50,000 Belly each. Arlong was giving the village what he saw as a generous and fair deal since he arrived without warning. Somehow the village exhausted all of their resources and managed to amass exactly 25 Million Belly, just enough for every man, woman and child living in the village…except for three, a poor family that lived on the outskirts of town, Bellemere, Nojiko and Nami!

Genzo hoped the house was far enough away so that Arlong and his crew would miss it, but at that moment, Bellemere was cooking a special dinner for Nami and Nojiko. A member of Arlong’s crew spotted smoke rising from the chimney in the distance. Arlong headed for the house while at the same time Nami and Nojiko, who had been hiding from the pirates and so far escaped detection, ran towards the house to warn Bellemere. The Fishman beat them to the house and Arlong entered the home only to be kicked in the face and sent him falling backwards with Bellemere landing on him jamming a shotgun down his throat. Hey, she was a Marine. But little good that would do against a Fishman like Arlong. He tore off the muzzle of the gun with his jaws and began to beat the shocked Bellemere. Meanwhile Nami and Nojiko reached the house from the back and planned to go in and grab Bellemere. Just before they could get inside, the village doctor barred their path and pleaded with them to remain silent and hidden behind the house.

In the front yard, Arlong had beaten Bellemere beyond any capable fighting condition and crushed her left arm with his foot. Bellemere realized that it was useless to fight and decided to use her hidden savings of 100,000 Belly to pay. Arlong’s Fishman Kuroobi confirmed that village documents had the woman listed as living alone. Behind the house, the doctor told the girls that they needed to run away in order to live and protect their 'mother'. Although it was a difficult decision, Nojiko finally agreed for the both of them and began to leave. Meanwhile Bellemere paid the 100,000 Belly but as Arlong and his gang began to head back, the woman declared that the money was to pay for her two daughters. Stunned, Arlong inquired what she meant and she confessed that she has two daughters. It would have hurt her more than anything to lie that she did not have a family. As she finished saying that, Nojiko and Nami rushed towards the front of the house and tearfully clutched onto their mother. Bellemere held them close and told them how much she wanted to buy them everything they ever wanted. Nami was overflowing with tears and told her that all her material wishes and desires were not really true, all she wanted was to stay with Bellemere forever.

Bellemere left the girls and stood to face Arlong. She confirmed that her daughters would be safe since she had paid the money. The monster agreed and with that he pointed his gun at her head. Bellemere’s last words were, “Nojiko! Nami! I love you.” And Arlong pulled the trigger.

Upon scouring Bellemere’s house, Arlong’s sword fighter, Hacchan, discovered an impressive collection of maps and notes on cartography. When he found out that it was the work of the little girl Arlong decided to 'borrow' her and make her a member of his gang. A short while later, Nami reappeared in the village, trembling but smiling. Arlong had employed her as his cartographer. Genzo couldn’t believe that she agreed to such a position but he and everyone present believed it when they saw a sawfish tattoo on her arm, the symbol of Arlong's gang. She cried and told everyone that she was being paid for her work, but they rejected her and exiled her from the village. Later, alone with Nojiko, Nami told her the truth. She made a deal with Arlong, for 100,000,000 Belly she could buy back Cocoyashi village from him. And so she temporarily put her dream of mapping the world on hold and worked for the demon she hated with a smile on her face, all the while holding close to her heart the goal of gathering 100 Million Belly by any means necessary.

Notes on Nami:

Personality

Nami is the second most intelligent member of the crew thus far. Chopper may be a doctor, but he is still young and does not know much of the world. Nami is simply a realistic person and has plenty of common sense. I would hope so, she’s the only person who can guide the ship! (God forbid Luffy or Zoro ever tried to do that)

After certain events transpire, Nami replaces her goal of obtaining 100 Million Belly with her original goal, mapping the world. But that doesn’t mean she plans on putting a stop to getting her hands on as much Belly as possible.

Nami's reaction to obtaining a bounty is a terribly interesting scene. Although she was nothing short of terror-stricken when her identity was revealed at Whiskey Peak, Nami's reaction to her bounty, meaning she would be targeted by Marines, World Government Agents and bounty hunters the world 'round, was relatively calm. After the initial shock, she was simply pleased with the fact that it was a good picture of her. That's Nami for you.

Nami has phenomenal business sense. She can take care of the crew's funds and treasures. Most importantly, she can keep them from getting ripped off by greedy bankers when they cash in their booty.

She is commonly called a 'Demon Woman', which is a result of her unpredictable behavior when angered not to mention her sneaky tricks.

Nami traditionally takes charge of the treasure the crew may find and distributes it (unevenly) amongst the members. However, she is forgiving when it comes to treasure that isn't decorated with jewels. She is even willing to let crew members select which treasure they like for their own so long as it isn't decorated in precious gems. However, for Nami to give treasure to anyone outside the crew for any reason is extremely rare.

Characteristics

As One Piece is an action/adventure series that means plenty of fights for the main characters. Unfortunately for her, Nami is not exactly a physical powerhouse. Thus Nami has used a series of weapons to aid her in battle. Nami’s first weapon is a normal staff. Sometime before the Arabasta arc Usopp created the Clima Tact for her; a weapon that uses weather as a means of attacking among other functions… This was later upgraded with Dials from Skypiea to her current weapon the Perfect Clima Tact.

Nami has a limited command of medical aid but her skills are not much beyond common sense for sea-faring illnesses.

Nami appears to be vert knowledgable of atmospheric conditions and sea currents. This is important for two reasons: firstly because it would appear that the other crewmembers have no meteorological skills (except for maybe Usopp and the second female crew member) and secondly because it is the basis of her weapons, Clima Tact and the Perfect Clima Tact.

Although perhaps not something to be proud of, Nami is the fourth greatest liar in One Piece.

According to Oda, Nami resembles a cat. Nice to see he followed this statement up with her bounty nickname somewhat supporting his observation.

Nami appears to be the 7th tallest human crew member as of Vol. 48.

Nami has superior fashion sense and I dare say not even the second female crew member can rival her but do not quote me on that, it has not been officially confirmed by Oda. She has a number of stunning outfits in the following styles: Casual, Conservative & Dress-to-Kill.

Trivia, Puns & Observations

Nami is technically the second person to join Luffy’s crew and the first female member.

Her birthday, July 3rd, is a little play on Japanese words. ‘NAna’ means 7 and ‘MItsu’ means 3.

Nami's bounty nickname was a great source of anxiety. The actual Japanese reads, 'dorobou neko' or 'thieving cat'. However, simply calling her that wouldn't get across the nuance found in the original phrase. The term is traditionally used for a woman who steals another woman's man as an insult. I embarked upon a long and dangerous journey through the land of Thesaurus but eventually emerged with something appropriate. Tigress exudes a sense of feral danger while carrying a hint of sexual innuendo. Ultimately I was very pleased with the translation as the term was actually used in the original sense as an insult directed at Nami shortly after the nickname was bestowed upon her.

Nami’s real parents, her real hometown and the force that destroyed her village are all unknown. In fact, her birth parents may still be alive.

Bellemere's three orange trees which Nami took with her from Cocoyashi Village are very near and dear to her heart. She has never said so directly but they are probably among her most prized possessions which she brought with her, the other being a bracelet she received from Nojiko.

As a creative way of making money, Nami is happy to lend her personal funds to anyone…at 300% interest.

The first map Nami plotted was the island Cocoyashi village is on.

Nami took 4th Place in the 2005 'Your Favorite Techniques' vote. She held 2 attacks in the Top 30.

Nami 'officially' joined the crew in Chapter 94 - 'The Second'.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Nami is adept at using her womanly 'gifts' as a weapon of sorts, or at the very least a means to an end. She follows the example set by Bellemere whenever she mentions how hot it is or asks amorous fellows to turn around while she changes her clothes on the spot. She takes advantage of Sanji far too often that way.

Unfortunately she is the physically weakest member of the crew. She usually stays out of battle but when she needs to fight she will resort to using the Perfect Clima Tact. Sometimes she even receives unexpected assistance. HOWEVER, Nami is one of the few characters who can actually bruise Luffy with her punches. Why you ask? Because her blows come straight from the heart. (Oda's words, not mine)

Nami can physically attack other women. This may seem like an obvious deduction but since there is one member of the crew who will not injure a woman this is definitely a strength for our 'Thieving Tigress'!

Call it a weakness if you like but some may call it her biggest strength; when money or treasure is involved a switch somewhere deep inside Nami flips on and she's all business all the time. If the prospect of treasure exists, Nami will dive straight into the heart of darkness to get her hands on it.

Nami can search women in places men can't. Yes, if you haven't read the complete story I'm sure this makes no sense, but trust me, it's a crucial part of the story at one point and she's a true life-saver.

Nami's Arsenal

The Clima Tact

Around the same time Usopp was working on his Usopp Hammer Special Edition, Nami asked Usopp to construct a new weapon for her. Well, somehow he managed to do it. The result, the Clima Tact, a weapon that can devastate any enemy
IF USED PROPERLY!!! The kanji for the weapon read: Tenkou Bou. Tenkou means weather as a general term. Some familiar with introductory Japanese may be confused why it isn't 'tenki'. While 'tenki' refers to weather in a particular place at a particular time, tenkou is a general term for weather. Bou is the same 'bo' Donatello uses, in other words, a staff. Supposedly the device breaks down into three simple smaller rods but according to certain formations Nami creates, it appears somewhat more complex. Also note that in Japanese, takuto means 'baton'. Not the cheerleading kind, the baton a conductor uses to conduct an orchestra. For example, the Japanese title of Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was in fact 'Kaze no Takuto' or the Baton of the Wind. However, since the yomigana is 'takuto' and I traditionally translate official foreign (meaning something other than Japanese in this case) attack names from Japanese pronunciation into their Western native equivalent (ie. Sanji's attacks aren't left as romanized Japanese) while leaving attacks with Japanese names either written as intended by yomigana or seen elsewhere in a reliable source in English, Tact it is. I suppose all I really want to say is, this is how I do it and if you don't like it, copy-and-paste this page into a Word document and replace 'tact' with 'baton' if it bothers you that much.

Notes from Usopp on using the Clima Tact:

Impact Dial

A special dial given to Nami by Gan Forr that absorbs energy and releases it when it is pushed in. It is not known whether she will keep it. Whenever she uses it, her arm takes a lot of stress.

The Perfect Clima Tact

Sometime after the crew's encounter with a certain Marine Vice Admiral and before their arrival in Water 7, Usopp completed an upgrade of the Clima Tact making it the Perfect Clima Tact. By adding dials from Skypiea to the device, Nami's Clima Tact became a terrifying weapon capable of far more than spouting out glorified static shocks. Now Nami can create nothing short of miniature tempests. As of this writing, Oda has not exercised much creativity with the device beyond lightning attacks but Nami will surely become a master of the elements before our series is complete. The kanji for the weapon remains mostly unchanged as 'tenkou bou kanseiban' where kanseiban indicates 'complete/perfect form'. Where the dials have been attached appear as three orbs attached between rod segments. Exactly which Dials the device includes has not been elaborated on.

Nami’s Own Attacks with the Clima Tact

Although Usopp did a fine job creating the Clima Tact…sort of…Nami managed to find uses for it that Usopp didn’t even intend to be present. By experimenting with the device, armed with the knowledge of how storm systems and other wonders of weather occur, Nami found some excellent offensive and defensive uses for the weapon. Just a note, Tempo means "weather" in Italian.

Sprinkler

A variation of Rain = Tempo, Nami simply spins around like a sprinkler, putting lots of moisture into the air. This is a key step in using the…

Thunderbolt = Tempo

A complex, but extremely useful offensive attack, the Thunderbolt = Tempo has a three-step preparation process:

Step 1.
Using the “Sprinkler” Nami loads her surroundings with moisture.
Step 2.
Then Nami uses a Cool Ball which she follows that with a Heat Ball. The Heat Ball sucks up the moisture and when the falling Cool Ball collides with the warm moisture it cools off rapidly becoming a tiny cloud! To create a larger cloud, Nami fires a rapid succession of Cool and Heat Balls.
Step 3.
Finally, Nami launches a Thunder Ball into the cloud and the result has a “shocking” effect.

Cool Ball Mirage

Using the Cool Ball, Nami can create false images. The cold temperature causes a change in air density and refracts light.

Fog = Tempo

Nami needs an open flame in order to do this confusing skill. So long as the air around the flame is extremely moist, if Nami unleashes Cool Balls the cool air passing over the flame will freeze the moisture creating a thick fog which she can use to escape or attack unseen.

Nami’s Perfect Clima Tact Attacks

Since Nami wasn't (hilarously) following a set of instructions from Usopp, that makes it much easier on me to group all of her attacks into one spot for her latest weapon. Since all of her moves have been upgraded, it also deserves a separate section to describe any differences between these and the old Clima Tact techniques.

Kuuru Booru
Cool Ball
Marines, World Government Agents, Zoro, Sanji, Califa
Vol.40 pg71. Vol.43 pg43.
Unlike the original Cool Ball which was slow and small, the Perfect Clima Tact is capable of churning out larger Cool Balls at a higher speed. As Cool Ball is an 'ingredient' of sorts for much larger attacks, such an increase helps Nami go from dangerous to deadly. The 'Ball' series seems to have received an increase in power as well but it remains to be seen whether the Cool Ball may be used solo as a weapon.

Vol.40 pg72. Vol.42 pg162.
To create this indescriminant electrictal discharge that fries everything in its path, Nami must first create a thunder cloud with a successive stream of Heat and Cool Balls. Thanks to the Dials in the Perfect Clima Tact, the cloud may be formed faster and is far larger than its predescessor. Once formed, when Nami unleashes a single Thunder Ball that can connect with the cloud, an indescriminant assault of lightning is unleashed on those unlucky enough to be in its way. Excellent for taking out a large group of goons.

Charging a Dial on the Perfect Clima Tact with electricity, Nami can use her staff as a kind of stun gun. This move can also be augmented by the Swing Arm function letting it serve as an electrified mace!
Suingu Aamu
Swing Arm
Calipha
Vol. 42 pg164.
Nami engages a Dial and detaches a segment of her staff then swings the loose end like a mace, smashing it into her opponent. As of this writing we have only seen this move used with an electrical charge but it may have other uses with other Dials. The kanji for this attack read 'fuusokukei' or anemometer, a device which measures wind velocity or pressure.
Sandaa Booru
Thunder Ball
Marines, World Government Agents, Zoro, Sanji, Califa
*Vol.40 pg72. Vol.42 pg163, 174. Vol.43 pg47.
Unlike the original Thunder Ball which was slow, small and merely gave victims a glorified static shock, the Perfect Clima Tact's Thunder Balls may be launched in speedy succession and pack an electrifying punch. In addition to being an attack on its own, it is also an 'ingredient' for some of Nami's larger attacks. This was the first of the 'Ball' series shown to be useful as a solo offensive attack since the upgrade.
Kuuru = Chaaji
Cool = Charge
Calipha
Vol.43 pg24, 44.
Nami engages a Dial on the Perfect Clima Tact which creates an area of cold air around the end of the staff. While this seems useless, it is part of a larger defensive technique.
Miraaju = Tempo
Mirage = Tempo
Calipha
Vol.43 pg25, 44, 45.
After engaging Cool Charge, Nami can swing her staff and make herself 'disappear'. Although this requires a strong belief in comic book physics, the area of dense cool air around her staff refracts light concealing her movements while creating false 'clones' of herself, however, with the increased speed and power of the Perfect Clima Tact, Nami can take this technique a step further...
Kuraudei = Tempo
Cloudy = Tempo
Calipha
Vol.43 pg43.
Nami declares, "The weather is 'Overcast'.", and shoots a spiraling mist from the Perfect Clima Tact that forms slightly dense clouds. This is a clear upgrade from the Clima Tact's Cloudy = Tempo which shot out flowers like in a magic show. The clouds formed by this are not as dense as the cloud formed by Heat and Cool Balls, thus not condusive to Thunder Bolt = Tempo. However, the clouds have other uses...
Rein = Tempo
Rain = Tempo
Calpiha, Nami
Vol.43 pg43.
Following Cloudy = Tempo, Nami declares, "The weather is 'Rainy'.", and shoots a succession of Cool Balls into the clouds causing a sudden downpour of rain. Useful for washing off in the midst of battle, which depending on the opponent, is far more useful than it sounds. Unlike Cloudy = Tempo, this is not a direct upgrade to the Perfect Clima Tact; it is an improvised multi-step move conceived by Nami. The original Rain = Tempo shot out spurts of water adding moisture to the air.
Fata Morugana
Fata Morgana
Calipha
Vol.43 pg46.
Using the increased power and speed of the Perfect Clima Tact, Nami performs Mirage = Tempo but creates 4 clones of herself and hides amongst them creating 5 targets for her enemy. The clones are also warped by the effects of the air and Nami may actually be one of them herself. This move's true strength lies in the power of the Thunder Ball. When Nami fires off a volley of Thunder Balls, her clone images do so as well making it nearly impossible for her enemy to discern which are real (20%) and which are fake (80%). A truly terrifying and effective attack that can even take down an assassin trained for speed. Even when the images are dissapated by enemies attacks, Nami can make them reappear almost instantly while remaining hidden among them. Interesting to note that Oda decided to make each a 'variant' of sorts on Nami's original design. One is tall and lanky, another resembles a steroid-loaded body-builder, one is a super-deformed Nami and another is a blobbly (yes blobbly) squat Nami. Of course the 'real' Nami appears during the technique as well but 'she' may be a clone herself. The name of the attack is the italian translation of King Arthur's mystical shape-shifting half-sister, Morgan le Fey. Her name in translation came to be used as a term for a specific type of mirage seen on distant horizons. It can seem to invert and thereby 'stretch' a distant object such as ships, islands or cliffs, making them appear much larger than they really are.
Daaku Kuraudo Tempo
Dark Cloud Tempo
Calipha
Vol.43 pg54.
Breaking her staff in two and holding two points together, Nami charges a highly condensed cloud filled with electric potential. The means by which she forms this and how long she must charge her staff to create it are unknown. However, when she unleashes it, it will hover and wait for a chance to discharge. The kanji for the attack 'kurokumo' literally means 'dark clouds'.
Saikuron = Tempo
Cyclone = Tempo
Calipha
Vol.43 pg56.
Nami links two of the Perfect Clima Tact's rods parallel to each other and hurls them at a target like a reinforced boomerang. Similar to the original Cyclone = Tempo it probably works on Heat Balls and Cool Balls constantly pushing out from the rods. Nami is clever enough to use this attack in a variety of ways.
Sandaa Ransu = Tempo
Lightning Lance = Tempo
Calipha
Vol.43 pgs 58 & 59.
Positioning the target's chest between herself and the dark cloud created by Dark Cloud Tempo, Nami initiates a Dial on her staff giving the cloud somewhere to discharge and in a truly vicious attack, Nami literally summons a bolt of lighting to the Perfect Clima Tact which travels straight through the heart of her poor victim. Ridiculously cool. The kanji reads 'raikouyari' or literally Lightning Lance.

*Thunder Ball was unnamed in this scene. I generally leave unnamed attacks unlisted, no matter how clear they may seem. However, it is impossible for Nami to initiate Thunder Bolt = Tempo without Thunder Ball and we clearly see her releasing a ball. There is no room for debate as to what attack it must be according to the story. To reflect this dilemna, with respect to the chronology of attacks, I kept Thunder Ball in the first place it was uttered while using the Perfect Clima Tact ie. after Swing Arm.

Unlisted Conflicts

The requisites for some battles are questionable. It appears that if only one punch (or kick or whatever) is thrown, then it does not count as a battle (except in the very first bout listed). There are also different types of conflicts, (meaning other than throwing punches or kicks), which are not listed. These are my opinion and were not officially listed.

  • Nami VS Captain Jango’s Crew [Chapter 29]
  • Crew VS Shoujou [Chapter 226]
