Here is the original profile in all its mediocre glory. There are mistakes aplenty both grammatically and pertaining to the series as well as information that is grossly outdated. I simply added it for fun to compare to the updated version. Some images may be glitchy or may not appear as they originally did which may, in turn, make some of the formatting messy. This is because even if I altered images, I did not change their original file names. I will try to fix them when I have some time.

I love One Piece. No really. I am in love with this series. If it asked me to join it in holy matrimony, I would probably be the first man to get married to a Japanese comic book. It's because of that love that I spent three months of my life devoted to creating what you are about to read. This is a detailed profile of the Straw-Hat Luffy Pirate Crew. When I first became interested in One Piece, there were only a small handful of English sites dedicated to it, and those that weren't [are] incoherent fanboy or fangirl ramblings were not exactly stellar (though there were a few). And so I knew that I had to do for One Piece what I did for Dragon Ball years ago, relinquish that thing which some call a life and devote my time and effort to bringing this wonderful series to you.
Luckily, the countless hours of work by One Piece translation expert Stephen have helped me read what I couldn't read (especially when it comes to Sanji's attacks) and understand the jibberish in SBS. His work has been invaluable in creating this profile. My other sources of data have been the manga themselves of course as well as the Grand Data File and Grand Character File. Those have saved me hours of leafing through the manga. And of course I must also thank a special person to me, Megumi Kisara, for her patience with me when I had seemingly inane questions about texts and translations.
So just a few notes to start off with. This took me three months to create, not you. That said, I do not expect to see this same information on your website. You may feel free to base your data on what I have presented here, but copying and pasting is something only prepubescent so-called "fans" would do. And besides, if you're even considering stealing data without asking first, your "site" obviously is not as popular as mine and will not get that way by being unoriginal.
Also please note, I left Lufy's "Gomu Gomu" in translations as Gomu Gomu, not "Rubber Rubber". Why? Because I like how it sounds.
Another thing, I have rearranged the names so that they appear as they would in America. I wouldn't have done so if Oda did not specifically say in an SBS that "Luffy" is his first name. So for purists out there, yes, we both know that in Japan it would be Monkey D. Luffy, but the server this site is located on is in the USA, and so long as it stays that way, I will officially list their full names that way.
And finally, speaking of names, I have used the English spellings provided in the manga and data books for characters. Therefore, "Luffy" is Luffy not "Rufi" or Usopp "Usoppu". There are only a FEW names I changed from what was written in the data book because they were obviously mis-spellings. And I KNOW that the katakana for Krieg is "Kuri~ku" which seems like 'Creek' BUT, Oda intended the name to be Krieg since krieg is German for "war".
That's enough out of me. ENJOY!
Ship Profile
Ship Name: Going Merry
Ship Type: Caravel
History of Going Merry
The Going Merry was designed by Merry, the butler of Kaya from Shiroppu Village. Originally the boat was intended for use by Kaya but after saving her from Captain Kuro, Merry and Kaya decided to bestow the ship upon Luffy and his crew. The bow of the ship is in the form of the head of a sheep, which is a joke based on Merry himself. As Merry is a butler, the Japanese word for butler is shitsuji and the word for sheep is hitsuji; this also accounts for why Merry's face resembles a sheep.
The Going Merry can survive heavy damage from storms or attack, but not without help from Usopp. Usopp traditionally works on the ship whenever it is [frequently] damaged, often times by Luffy's own stupidity or whims. When the ship reached Jaya Island it seemed on the verge of falling to pieces, but the Allied Primate Forces worked together on the ship for one night and restored it to full working potential as well as upgrading the ship to "Going Merry Flying Model" with wooden wings for travel on the Knock-Up Stream.

Cross-Section of Going Merry

Lounge
The lounge consists of the Meeting Room, Kitchen & Helm in one room. Crew memme to this room for food and drink, or just to shoot the breeze. There is no exterior steering wheel for the ship, rather a whip-staff is used. By pushing the whip-staff left or right, the rudder will move in either direction.

Men’s Quarters
The men’s room is located directly beneath the deck. The mast runs through the center of the room which is equipped with hammocks and super comfy couches. It is the largest room on board, but because there are so many men, things are a bit cramped (which is okay because they’re men). There is also an emergency exit to the women’s quarters which must tempt Sanji to no end.

Storage & Aft Cannon Deck
Beer barrels, water barrels, rations and what few treasure chests Nami doesn’t store in her own room can be found here. The lounge is located above this room and as such, the whip-staff runs across the ceiling to the back of the ship. Two cannons located on either side of the ships rear are located here. This also houses the entrance to the women’s quarters, and it is tightly locked. The entrance to the bathroom is also located here.

Women’s Quarters
Easily the most luxurious room on board, the women’s room has it all and rightfully so as it was originally designed for Kaya by Merry. A descending staircase leads down into this comfortable room which even has a bar that was installed by a carpenter named Teru in Kokoyashi Village. There is a pull-down hammock here as well as a bookshelf filled with fine reading. The treasure chests here are all Nami’s, of course. There is also an emergency exit to the men’s quarters, but it is not likely that will be employed any time soon.

Anchor Deck & Fore Canon Deck
Also known as the Military Storage room, this is where one may find the forward cannon, plenty of gunpowder, cannonballs, lifesavers, emergency oars and of the course the anchor line and capstand. Simply rotate the capstand to lower or raise the anchor’s depth. OH! And don’t forget cleaning supplies.

Bathroom
Although the men don’t usually relieve themselves here, (the ocean is wide and vast my friends), this is where they can find a modern toilet should they wish to do so civilly. The sink, bath and shower nozzle are also located here along with a squeegee. Since moisture is not good for the wood, everyone must dry everything with the squeegee when they finish taking a shower. On one side of the bathroom, separated by a wall, is a “Water-Drawing Machine”. This room can be accessed from a door in the stairs on deck. This special machine draws up water from the bottom of the ship that may be used for cleaning or putting out fires. This fantastic device even creates an electric current! There were two of these originally…but Luffy broke one.

Luffy’s Favorite Seat (The Bow) & Nami's Orange Trees
The bow of the ship is where Luffy loves to sit. In storms, freezing weather, the middle of battle, whatever, Luffy can be found nestled on top of the wooden sheep’s head. One might question Luffy’s affinity for such a dangerous spot, especially since he can’t swim. Oh well, whatever makes him happy.
These three orange trees were taken from Bellemere’s plantation to be used on the ship as a source of emergency food, and to make sure no one ever comes down with scurvy. Nami takes care of them and Sanji guards them (from Luffy).

Gives Luffy the ability to stretch his body like rubber.
History of Luffy
Born in mystery, Luffy grew up with a desire to become the Pirate King by traveling to the end of Grand Line and retrieving One Piece the greatest treasure of the former Pirate King, Gold Roger. Very little is known about Luffy’s origin, and it has been proposed by some that his desire to become the Pirate King may be destiny rather than passion. Luffy’s other goal is to reunite with his childhood idol, Red-Haired Shanks. Shanks was a pirate of questionable status who was taking time off in East Blue at the village, which Luffy lived in, Fuschia Town. After Shanks had spent a year docked in town, at age 7, Luffy was convinced to join Shanks’ pirate crew and one day, standing atop Shanks’ ship, drove a dagger into his left cheek in order to prove his manliness. The wound would leave a scar he would carry for the rest of his life.
The same day he stabbed himself, Shanks’ men took Luffy drinking with them in a local bar. Just to have some fun, they teased and treated Luffy like a little kid, which frustrated him to no end. In his anger, he devoured a strange fruit lying in an open box on the bar counter top. Moments later, a mountain bandit named Higuma crashed Shanks’ party in the bar. He cockily promised not to hurt anyone, he just wanted to buy some wine. The barkeep Makino politely told him that there was no more, the pirates had just bought the last batch. Shanks happily offered his unopened bottle to Higuma, but the bandit broke the bottle with his fist as it lay in Shanks’ hand. Shanks ignored the bandit’s grim boast of having killed 56 men and began cleaning the broken glass from the floor. Higuma swept the countertop clean, sending a barrage of bottles and glasses smashing to the floor on top of Shanks. With that, Higuma called the pirates a crew of cowards and left. Almost instantly after the thief and his thugs took their leave, the pirate crew burst into laughter. But Luffy wasn’t laughing, instead he began screaming at Shanks for not standing up for himself. The captain understood Luffy’s anger but told him not to worry so much about a little spilt beer and wine. Luffy refused to accept the words from his idol and stormed away in a fury. Shanks grabbed his arm, only to watch it stretch across the room as Luffy tramped through the bar.
Fate played a part in that day for Luffy as the fruit he had just eaten a few minutes ago was a Devil’s Fruit, a mysterious fruit of unknown origins that grants whomever eats it unique powers. Luffy so happened to have devoured the Gomu Gomu Fruit that turned him into a rubber human capable of stretching to great lengths among other things. Of course Luffy creates many new and different techniques, but those all come later. There is one catch though, whomever eats a Devil’s Fruit will be unable to move or use any powers when submerged in water, and thereby drown. There are also other related weaknesses, but I’ll leave those as a secret for now.
Anyway, back to the story at hand. After reprimanding Luffy and telling him about what his life was going to be like, Shanks and his men headed out to sea for a bit. That didn’t really bother Luffy though, he was still angry with them for being cowards, plus he was having far too much fun with his new powers. Except for his ability to stretch like a rubber band, life had pretty much returned to normal for Luffy.
One day he was in Makino’s bar, discussing Shanks with her. He reiterated his disgust with Shanks for standing down. Makino commented that she thought it was cooler if a guy could take insults like that and smile afterwards. In the middle of their conversation, an old acquaintance came barging through the door, Higuma. He was pleased to see that the bar was empty and demanded beer. Before the gang had even begun drinking, Makino witnessed Luffy get in a fight with Higuma after the killer continued to bad-mouth Shanks. She bolted to get help while the criminal and his goons kicked, beat and punched the boy, fascinated that they weren’t damaging him much because of his rubber body. The village chief ran to the scene of the beating and begged Higuma and his men to let Luffy go, all the while the little rubber boy was spouting off insults and obscenities demanding that Higuma apologize for what he said. Fed up with the boy’s insults, Higuma decided to kill the boy but a man approached from the back of the crowd of villagers, “Well no one greeted us at the dock so we figured something was up.” Shanks and his crew had returned.
Shanks ignored the bandit and chided Luffy, “Didn’t you say your punch was going to be as strong as a pistol?” Again Shanks’ calm demeanor infuriated the bandits and one gang member pulled a gun on Shanks. The red-haired captain warned him that since he was using a gun, he had officially wagered his life. Instantly from out of nowhere, Shanks’ Officer Lucky Roo apathetically put a bullet through the bandit’s head while gnawing on a piece of meat. The bandits were taken back by the rash move but Shanks reminded them that they were, after all, pirates. Shanks told them that he can forgive anyone that makes light of him personally, but won’t forgive anyone unlucky enough to threaten his friends. The bandits called out a few nasty threats and then attacked. After putting his cigarette out on the head of the first one to reach him, Shanks’ Lieutenant Ben Beckman knocked out the entire gang with only the butt of his rifle.
Finding himself in quite a pickle, Higuma used a smoke bomb to escape with Luffy. Thinking that the pirates would instinctively search for him in the mountains (as he was a mountain bandit) Higuma felt quite clever that he had escaped to sea in a small boat. After reaching a point far out on the coast of Fuschia Town, Higuma kicked Luffy into the water and watched him begin to drown. But as Luffy struggled to stay above the water, a giant ominous shadow crept up behind the laughing bandit. Before he could even finish a sentence exclaiming his surprise, the sea serpent known as Lord of the Coast devoured Higuma and part of the boat in a single bite. Luffy screamed for help as the monster charged for him, mouth open, showing his sword-like teeth. As the monster closed his jaws, a figure grabbed Luffy and turned him away from the serpent. Shanks had appeared! Shanks stared at the serpent with eyes like a mad demon and told it to get lost. The gigantic monster did not even seem to think twice as it sped away. Shanks congratulated Luffy for standing up for him in his place, he even said he owed him one. But Luffy did not stop crying. Despite his idol’s smile and kind words, Luffy was too shocked that the serpent’s bite meant for him, had torn off Shanks’ left arm.
A short time later, Shanks left the town for good. He decided not to take the young boy with him, but instead gave Luffy his straw hat and made a promise with him. He told Luffy to return the hat to him one day if he really wanted to be the Pirate King. Luffy tearfully bid Shanks farewell and began training to become stronger in order to fulfill his promise.
10 Years Later
Luffy left his village with only a small boat, sparse supplies and a barrel. No crew, no pirate ship and no sense of direction, Luffy D. Monkey set out at the age of 17 to obtain a pirate ship, gather a crew of ten, find the One Piece and become the Pirate King!
Notes on Luffy:
Luffy redefines the meaning of “adventurous”. One Piece author Eichiro Oda has actually given Luffy a signature eye sparkle every time the possibility of a new exploration or opportunity for an adventure pops up. It is important to realize that Luffy has no concept of what being a pirate is by standards that exist in our world. One may conjure up images of a grotesque black-toothed pirate pillaging and raping villages under the Jolly Roger. Luffy has no desire for any of that, his goal is to have as much fun while living as possible, to see new things and to go to new places. Make no mistake, he is not trying to become a better person, Luffy’s personality, loyalties and perspective on life have remained relatively unchanged since the story began. He has no desire to better himself as a person, he simply wants to do and see as much as possible in his life. As clearly illustrated during his encounter with a certain villain in Logue Town, Luffy does not care if he should die at any time or place. In this sense, Luffy is living the true pirate life as it exists in the world of One Piece. Note that the pirates obsessed with destruction and material wealth are the ones who fall at the hands of Luffy and his expanding crew.
Luffy’s origin remains a mystery as of this writing. However, every week we come closer and closer to finding out who he is, where he comes from, and why is it his “fate” to follow the path of Shanks and a few others. There are several secrets about Luffy that have not yet been revealed.
Luffy’s most prized possession and “treasure”, as you may have guessed, is his straw hat. The hat given to him by Shanks is more important to him than his own life. His devotion to it was first seen during his battle with Captain Buggy. Buggy stabbed the hat and sent Luffy into a rage. After the battle, Nami was able to mend the holes in the hat for him. Luffy rarely parts with the hat. He once put it on Nami before the battle with Arlong.
In order to regain his strength, Luffy needs either to eat red meat or take a nap.
Luffy’s birthday is May 5th. The gag behind this is, May 5th is Children’s Day in Japan and Luffy is nothing but a big kid.
It is very difficult for Luffy to pay attention to serious conversations. Often he will listen to half of a lecture (or less) when being told something important.
His friends mean as much to Luffy as his straw hat. He will do anything for them.
Unfortunately Luffy has a hard time remembering people’s names, locations or expressions and often confuses them, sometimes with disastrous results.
The first bounty placed on Luffy was 30,000,000 Belly, which was after he defeated Arlong and threatened the corrupt Marine Captain of the 17th Division, Nezumi. After defeating Sir Crocodile a 100,000,000 Belly bounty was placed on his head.
Luffy’s distinct laugh is: “Heeheehee~”
Brace yourself. According to Oda in various SBS installments, Luffy's arm can stretch 72 Gomu Gomu's. 1 Gomu Gomu is equal to 10 Maerchen Gomu Gomu's. (Maerchen is German for 'fairy-tale' which in Japanese, "meruhenchikku", means kind of fantasy-like) 1 Maerchen Gomu Gomu is equivalent to 10 Funky Gomu Gomu's which means that he can stretch 7,200 Funky Gomu Gomu's. A Poison Gomu Gomu is equal to 10 Gomu Gomu's. Make sense? I HOPE NOT!
According to Oda, Luffy most resembles a monkey....DUH
Although not officially ranked as one of the top five liars in the series thus far, Luffy is close to being in the running. His lies are often related to whether or not he devoured the ship’s emergency rations.
Strength and Weaknesses
Luffy cannot be crushed, at least not as far as we know. Normal punches or blows do not effect him, however particularly powerful attacks from formidable opponents may injure him and cause bleeding. Normal bullets will also bounce away from Luffy’s body harmlessly, however, since rubber may be cut or sliced, Luffy may also be cut. Luffy is also susceptible to hunger and dehydration. And last but not least, since Luffy ate the Devil’s Fruit, he loses the ability to function well in water and may become immobilized or weak. He also loses his Gomu Gomu abilities when submerged. In that same vein, Luffy is powerless when in the presence of Seastone, a unique metal that the Marines have built their prisons with. It emits the same type of energy as the ocean and therefore has the same effect as being in water for people who have eaten Devil’s Fruit. Some characters even have weapons constructed of Seastone.
Luffy Spoilers
Click this link and highlight the text to see Luffy Spoilers, but I am warning you right now, these in particular are HUGE and will ruin many of the series’ best surprises. Don't say I didn't warn you. And one other thing...don't go acting like it isn't a big deal and tell other people. Some of these were revealed after over half a decade from the manga's start. If you ruin it for yourself, at least respect other's wishes.

Gomu Gomu no Ikebana | Gomu Gomu Japanese Flower Arrangement | Laboon | Vol.12 pg105. | Using his own ship’s mast, Luffy plunged it into Laboon’s face like a part of an ikebana arrangement. This was a gag technique. |
Gomu Gomu no Tonkachi | Gomu Gomu Hammer | Candle Set, Candle Lock, Mr. 3 | Vol.14 pg123. | Using Mr. 3 ‘s skills against him, Luffy fires his arm covered in the Officer Agent’s ‘Candle Lock’ at him. It is strong enough to break through 3’s ‘Candle Wall’. |

Gomu Gomu no Bo-gan | Gomu Gomu Bow Gun | Wapol | Vol.17 pg120. | Luffy coils himself tightly around his opponent, then releases them, sending them flying into the air as if shot from a bow gun. |
Gomu Gomu no Dame Da!! | Gomu Gomu No Way! | Usopp | Vol.19 pg9. | Luffy defends his last water ration in the desert from Usopp by swinging it around. This was a gag technique. |
Gomu Gomu no Baku Baku | Gomu Gomu Chomp Chomp | Sir Crocodile | Vol.20 pg39. | Taking a cue from Wapol, Luffy expands his mouth and tries to catch his opponent by eating them. |
Gomu Gomu no Marunokogiri | Gomu Gomu Buzz Saw | Sir Crocodile | Vol.22 pg82. | Luffy grabs onto his opponent from afar by stretching his hands out in front of him. He then curls his body into a ball and circulates at an incredible rate. Finally he pulls himself towards his enemy smacking into them with great force. |
Gomu Gomu no Pisutoru Shotto | Gomu Gomu Pistol Shotgun | Sir Crocodile | Vol.22 pg114. | This begins like Gomu Gomu Pistol, but Luffy twangs his rubber arm before it impacts with its target, creating a single barrage of punches in one hit. It is difficult to translate this attack, normally I would just call it Gomu Gomu Shotgun, but Luffy specifically says “Pistol” before “Shotto” which is Japanese for ‘shotgun’. The kanji reads “Scatter Shot”. In conclusion, I’m not sure if Oda intends it to be ‘scatter shot’ or ‘shotgun’, but shotgun sounds cooler. |
Mizu Mizu no Pisutoru | Water Water Pistol | Sir Crocodile | Vol.22 pg114. | After filling himself with water, Luffy shoots it out of his mouth in bubbles. |
Gomu Gomu no Suto-mu | Gomu Gomu Storm | Sir Crocodile, Ao Kiji | Vol.23 pg81. Vol.34 pg99. | A furious storm of countless powerful punches similar to Gomu Gomu Gatling but far more intense and from a further distance. |
Gomu Gomu no Hanabi | Gomu Gomu Fireworks | White Berets | Vol.26 pg113. | After spinning in mid-air, Luffy explodes into a display of kicking feet and punching hands. |
Gomu Gomu no "Bo~" | Gomu Gomu "Gu~h" | Ener | Vol.30 pg119. | By emptying his mind (hence the "Gu~h") Luffy is able to hide his movements from someone who can sense Mantra. The drawback is that since he cannot think, he cannot attack and may only dodge attacks instinctively. |
Gomu Gomu no Tako | Gomu Gomu Octopus | Ener | Vol.30 pg120. | This is the second move Luffy creates in an attempt to counteract Mantra sensers. Luffy allows his body to go limp, making his appendages seem like octopus tentacles. |
Gomu Gomu no Tako Hanabi | Gomu Gomu Octopus Fireworks | Ener | Vol.30 pg121. | Luffy sends out a fury of punches and kicks from a jumping position in no particular direction. Since he is acting, and therefore 'thinking' about doing something, that movement may be read by a Mantra seer. HOWEVER, with his body limp, if his blows bounce off of an object, he cannot control where the rebounded barrage of punches and kicks end up, much to the dismay of someone trying to read his actions. |
Gomu Gomu no Raifuru | Gomu Gomu Rifle | Ener | Vol.30 pg125. | Luffy winds up his fist and pounds it into an opponent much like the Gomu Gomu Pistol. The kanji directly tranlates to "revolving shot". Since the Japanese word for rifle is "raifuru" the double meaning here is, I suppose, that modern rifles put a rather lengthy spin on the bullets fired from them. In this sense, Luffy is firing his "bullet" from a rifle as opposed to a shotgun or pistol as in other techniques he displays. |
Gomu Gomu no Hanabi-Ougon Botan | Gomu Gomu Fireworks-Golden Tree Peony | Ener | Vol.32 pg40. | With a giant gold sphere sealed around his right hand, Luffy fires the orb in all directions within a massive electrical field in an attempt to conduct a huge amount of electrical current to his body, acting as a ground. |
Gomu Gomu no Ougon Raifuru | Gomu Gomu Golden Rifle | Ener | Vol.32 pg58 | With a giant golden sphere attached to his arm, Luffy winds up his fist and delivers a devasting blow just as with Gomu Gomu Rifle but combined with the fantastic weight of the massive orb. |
Gomu Hukku | Gomu Hook | Foxy | Vol.33 pg191 | Luffy delivers a painful hook to his opponent from behind. |

History of Zoro
As a boy, Zoro Roronoa trained in a certain dojo under the tutelage of an instructor who has not yet been given a name. Zoro was the strongest male in the dojo, beating even adults with his Two Sword technique. However, there was one person that Zoro could never beat regardless of his training and skill, his teacher’s daughter, Kuina. Kuina had beaten Zoro for 2,000 matches, even though she used only one sword and Zoro had mastered using two. Although she was a few years older than Zoro, since he was able to beat adults, he did not see that as an excuse to lose to her. For their 2,001st match, Zoro met with Kuina on the night of a full moon and suggested they fight in secret with real swords, rather than use bamboo training swords. The fight began and although he gave his best, in almost no time Zoro suffered his 2,001st defeat. Zoro was furious with himself for losing yet again, but in the privacy of the night, Kuina began to lament that she was the one who should regret the outcome.
Zoro was speechless, Kuina began to cry and explained that as a male who had not yet reached adulthood, in just a few years by virtue of his male physique he would grow stronger than her, as would all male swordsmen; she could never aspire to be the strongest. Using an unusual display of intelligence, instead of gloating over the sudden realization Zoro became furious with Kuina and told her that thinking like that was nonsense. If she thought like that, then if Zoro ever did defeat her, she could just use the fact that she was a woman as an excuse for the loss. After all of his hard training and effort, Zoro would have hated her for letting his win be attributed to the course of physiological growth. Kuina took comfort in his words and the two made a special promise that night that one of them would become the strongest sword swordfighter in the world.
As fate would have it, the very next day Zoro’s training was interrupted by cries from an acquaintance. Kuina had fallen down the stairs at her home and died from the landing. Zoro masked his sadness by being angry with her since they had just made a promise the night before. Although he accused her of running away from him, it couldn’t stop him from being passionate about fulfilling his promise. He begged his instructor to have her sword and he allowed Zoro to receive it. Zoro made a promise on her sword to become the strongest swordsman on Earth, and from that day on, Zoro trained and battled with three swords.
Notes on Zoro
Zoro’s greatest goal is to fulfill his promise to Kuina and to become the strongest swordsman in the world. So great is his resolution to the promise, that in order to join Luffy, he agreed to be a member of his crew only if Luffy would disembowel himself by ritual suicide should he stand in the way of Zoro’s goal.
Zoro is a man feared by people of good and evil. His nickname before joining Luffy was “Pirate Hunter Zoro”. In reality, Zoro is not normally a fearsome person, most people are afraid of him because they don’t know enough about him. The only reason he collected bounties was because it was his only way to make a living.
Zoro left his hometown to search for a man, “Hawk Eyes” Mihawk Juraquille. Mihawk was formerly one of the greatest pirates, and is a current member of The Seven Armed Seas. In addition to that, he is also known as The Strongest Swordsman in the World. Obviously Zoro’s intentions were to locate Mihawk and beat him in a duel then declare himself The Strongest Swordsman in the World making his goal and oath a reality. There was just one problem, Zoro couldn’t find him. Wishing to temporarily put his quest on hold, Zoro attempted to return to his hometown. Once again there was a small problem. As fans of One Piece will slowly come to realize, Zoro has no sense of direction whatsoever. He could not find his way out of a shoebox. So, Zoro collected bounties in order to survive while he worked his way home. The horrible stories about him came about because, well, Zoro is indeed a demon in battle.
Zoro’s birthday is November 11th, if you write that date in numerical form as 11/11 that is what Japanese call “zorome” or a sequence of the same number. Another example of a “zorome” would be 777. Anyway, I hope you see the gag here.
Zoro loves to sleep. Just as Luffy needs red meat to recharge him, Zoro just needs a few winks.
Zoro’s head was given a bounty of 60,000,000 Belly after he killed the bounty hunter Boness Daz.
According to Oda, Zoro most resembles a shark.
Like Luffy, if Zoro has any living relatives their identity has not been disclosed.
Zoro bears a large diagonal scar across his chest that is from his duel with Mihawk.
After his defeat at the hands of Juraquille during the Baratie story arc, Zoro makes a vow, never to lose again until he has beaten Mihawk.
Miss. Wednesday insults Zoro by calling him "Mr. Bushido". However, the title stuck and became his nickname.
When he has a sword in his mouth, Zoro speaks with the power of his heart. (So says Oda sensei anyway)
During battle, Zoro is famous for losing ridiculous amounts of blood. Here are some amounts he has lost:
Zoro VS Buggy: 1 Liter
Zoro VS Nyaaban Brothers: 1.5 Liters
Zoro VS Mihawk: 3 Liters
Zoro VS Hacchan & Arlong: 5 Liters
And just for reference, the human body hold 5.6 liters of blood.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Since the addition of the second female member to the crew, Zoro is probably the third strongest member of Luffy’s crew. This is a result of his endless and inhuman training. He trains himself not only physically, but mentally as well. For example: swimming in freezing temperatures for extended periods of time. This training always keeps him in top shape and he is certainly a dangerous force to be reckoned with.
Zoro takes the majority of heavy damage among the members of Luffy’s crew. It seems that Oda makes it a point to have Zoro drenched in blood after every major battle, with plenty of scars to brag about. And even better, severe damage to his vitals organs do not seem to slow him down much. Zoro is probably the most resilient member of the crew and all he needs is some good sleep to recover from almost any ailment.
The name of One Piece's aspiring swordsman was based on the pirate name of French born Jean David Nau. Jean joined the buccaneers in 1692 and took the name "L'ollonais". He was a buccaneer famous for being the fiercest of the Carribean Pirates (Not to be confused with the Pirates of the Carribean). Accounts of him tell that he tore out the hearts of prisoners and gnawed on them, squeezed out their eyes, and meticulously tore them to pieces; not necessarily in that order or to the same person, naturally that would be cruel. Jean was killed by natives somewhere between 1688 & 1689. Ironically he was supposedly torn to pieces himself and then thrown in a fire.
Zoro’s greatest weakness is his lack of sense of direction. He has none to speak of. It is a miracle that he knows his left from his right. The first indication of this is during his first conversation with Luffy on the sea when he says (in so few words) that he got lost trying to get back to his home. One tends to read that as he simply does not know how to navigate, but as the series progresses, we find that the only reason he actually manages to end up at the right place at the right time, is purely by luck.
A vexing weakness of Zoro is the impossibly near-sighted Marine Headquarters Sergeant Major Tashigi. After first meeting her in Logue Town, Zoro has been unable to face her without running away.

Zoro's Special Attacks
The Three Swords of Zoro Roronoa
After he takes up the sword of his fallen rival and training partner Kuina, Zoro trains himself in the way of the Three Sword School. He holds two swords in his hands, and a third sword, Kuina’s, in his mouth. At the beginning of One Piece only one of Zoro’s three swords had a special origin. His other two were destroyed during his first battle against Mihawk. As of this writing, (Vol. 28), Zoro’s three swords are as follows:
Wadou Ichimonji “The Straight Path of Harmony”: One of the 21 Oo Wazamono ‘21 Great Edges’ and formerly the sword of Kuina. After her death, with permission from her father, Zoro took her sword and swore on it to obtain the title, Strongest Swordsman in the World. Zoro is unaware of the sword’s history as one of the Oo Wazamono until it was brought to his attention in Logue Town. He calls this sword his treasure.
Sandai Kitetsu “Third Generation Demon-Splitter”: Although not belonging to the Saijou Oo Wazamono, Oo Wazamono or Ryou Wazamono, this cursed sword is a Wazamono (literally ‘Sharp Sword’). The second generation of the sword, Nidai Kitetsu, is an Oo Wazamono and the first generation, Shodai Kitetsu, is a Saijou Oo Wazamono Greatest of the Great Edges. Zoro obtains this sword in Logue Town from a small weapons shop. Because of the grim history of this family of swords, no one will use them as their owners have all had tragic deaths. Zoro ignores the warnings of a curse on the sword and tests his compatibility with it by flipping it into the air and holding his arm out in its path. The sword harmlessly flips off his arm by striking him with the blunt side. When the owner of the shop sees this display of fearlessness, he gives the sword to Zoro without question.
Yubashiri “Snow Run”: Upon seeing Zoro’s display of trust in his swords, Ippon Matsu, the owner of a weapons shop in Logue Town, bestows Yubashiri, one of the 50 Ryou Wazamono, on Zoro without charge. He realizes that Zoro is a true swordsman and deserves the sword
Previously Used Swords
The Two Katana:
Zoro first used two non-descript katana. If these had any special origin or significance, it is not known. Mihawk destroyed them.
The Swords of Yasoku & Johnny:
During the final battle at Arlong Park, Zoro’s pals gave him their swords to use in place of his two that were destroyed by Mihawk.
Three Sword School Attacks
Name of Attack | Translation | Foe Used Against | Location in Manga | Description | Pun or Extra Meaning |
Oni Giri | Demon Cleave | Cabaji, Mihawk, Hacchan, Luffy, Mr. 1 | Vol.2 pg188. Vol.6 pg130. Vol.10 pg81. Vol.13 pg77. Vol.21 pg152. | Zoro crosses his arms and cuts through his enemy by uncrossing them across his foe’s chest. | An ‘onigiri’ is a small rice ball you can carry with you and eat. |
Tora Gari | Tiger Hunt | Nyaaban Brothers, Mihawk, Mr. 1, Braham | Vol. 4 pg144. Vol.6 pg136. Vol.21 pg154. Vol.28 pg71. | Sword in mouth, Zoro puts his other swords behind his left side then swings the two swords forward, diagonally down to his front right side. | Toragari is a type of haircut |
Sanzen Sekai | Third Millenium World | Mihawk | Vol.6 pg142 | With sword in mouth, Zoro flips his other two swords in front of him like a windmill, then rushes his opponent, cutting through them. He finishes with his left hand in front, and his right hand behind him. | In Buddhist terms, Sanzen Sekai, (literally 3000 worlds), represents the universe. A far more common term, Ichinen Sanzen, is the concept of existing in the moment of the universe. |
Tou Rou Nagashi | Bleeding the Wolf | Hacchan | Vol.10 pg71. | Zoro must be very close for this maneuver. He falls backwards on one foot towards his opponent and uses two swords to defend himself while he uses one to cut the stomach of his foe and finally uses his foot to flip himself behind them. | Tourounagashi is a Japanese ceremony for the dead in which paper lanterns are sent down a river. |
Tatsu Maki | Dragon Coil | Hacchan | Vol.10 pg83. | Zoro holds his swords raised and facing forward at his side, then spins and creates a rising coil that takes the unfortunate recipient of the attack up in the air with it. The coil is also sharp as a blade and will cut the foe if they touch it doing double damage. Should his opponent move around after being hit by this attack successfully, they will lose a significant amount of blood. | Tatsumaki means ‘cyclone’ but it is also a type of sushi roll.
Yaki Oni Giri | Burning Demon Cleave | Mr. 5 | Vol.14 pg175. | The same as Oni Giri, but Zoro’s swords are on fire and set his opponent aflame when he cuts them. | A yaki onigiri is a baked rice ball. |
Ushi Bari | Bull Horns | Mr. 1 | Vol.21 pg143. | His starting position is similar to Oni Giri, but here Zoro points the swords in his hands forward, then rushes his opponent and uncrosses his hands, ending with his swords pointing upwards. | An ushibari is a beam of Japanese pine that is used when constructing an aesthetically harmonious and traditional Japanese-style room. |
Gazami Dori | Crab Clutch | Mr. 1 | Vol.21 pg170. | This is hard to explain. With sword in mouth, Zoro puts his right arm across his chest in a backwards “L” shape. The sword in that hand is positioned above the sword in his mouth. His left hand is lowered and he holds that sword below the other two. His three swords form a crab-claw-like shape. He ‘closes the claw’ on his opponent in an attempt to severe a part of them. | Kazamidori means ‘weathervane’ but this attack begins with a “G”. In that case, who knows! |
Hyaku Hachi Pondo Hou | 108 Pound Cannon | Ohm | Vol.29 pg146. | A simply amazing technique. With Wadou Ichimonji in his mouth, Zoro holds his other two swords above his right shoulder and slices downward, sending three cutting waves at his unlucky opponent. The waves can cut through barriers and still have enough speed and power to down an enemy. | Cannons are typically named by the weight of their projectile. So this is a 108lb. Cannon. However, the ‘pondo’ is a play on the Japanese word ‘bonnou’ which is in the kanji name of the attack. Bonnou is a Buddhist-related term which means the ‘earthly troubles or desires of the mind’. Meanwhile the 'hou' also has a double meaning. 'Hou' would be the word for cannon but Oda has used a kanji of the same pronunciation which means Phoenix, hence the projectile nature of the attack. In review, Zoro is firing three lifetimes of 36 earthly desires at his opponent (which adds up to 108) via Phoenixes. OUCH. Note that each lifetime has 36 sins, and each of Zoro's swords represents a lifetime. (See below for 36 Pound Cannon attack). |

Name of Attack | Translation | Villains Used Against | Location in Manga | Special Notes | Pun or Extra Meaning |
Taka Nami | Hawk Wave | 100 Bounty Hunters of Whiskey Peak, Ohm | Vol.12 pg184. Vol.29 pg140. | Using two swords, Zoro slashes and sends a cutting wave towards a group of enemies when he is in the air. | Takanami simply means a tall wave. |
Saikuru | Cycle | Franky's Underlings | Vol.34 pg175. | Holding two swords as rhino horns, Zoro spins and blows weak opponents flying away. | The kanji for this attack may be read as "sai" and "kuru" or 'Circling Rhino'. |
One Sword School Attacks
Name of Attack | Translation | Villains Used Against | Location in Manga | Special Notes | Pun or Extra Meaning |
Shishi Son Son | Lion Song | Mr. 1 | Vol.21 pg183. | Zoro draws one sword and slices through his enemy after finding their “breath”. | Shishisonson means “One’s Offspring” |
Sanjuuroku Pondo Hou | Thirty-six Pound Cannon | Braham, Ohm | Vol.28 pg79. Vol.29 pg142. | Zoro shoots a cutting wave at his enemy with one sweep of the Wadou Ichimonji | Here goes. Cannons are typically named by the weight of their projectile. So this is a 36lb. Cannon. However, the ‘pondo’ is a play on the word ‘bonnou’ which is in the kanji name of the attack. Bonnou means the ‘earthly troubles or desires of the mind’. So Zoro is firing a lifetime of 36 earthly desires at his opponent. Ouch |

No Sword School Attacks
Name of Attack | Translation | Villains Used Against | Location in Manga | Special Notes | Pun or Extra Meaning |
Tatsu Maki | Dragon Coil | Pickles | Vol.32 pg137. | Using no swords whatsoever, Zoro creates the form of a Dragon with his bare hands and rotates his torso creating a surge of wind that fires his enemy away or at a specific target. | Tatsumaki means ‘cyclone’ but it is also a type of sushi.

Note: As the series progresses, the background stories of characters who become part of Luffy’s crew have grow to huge lengths. It went from a few panels with Zoro to over half of Volume 16 for Chopper. Honestly it scares me to think how huge a certain someone's history will be when it is revealed, especially since Oda is cloaking it in mystery. Sorry, I’m rambling. What I mainly want to do is apologize for the length of some of these histories! Feel free to paste them into a document program and print them out for relaxed reading. Sorry, there wasn’t any other way.

History of Nami
Bellemere was probably never a weak woman. She left her hometown of Kokoyashi Village in East Blue and became a Marine. Although the circumstances surrounding how she became a Marine, where she went and what she saw are unknown, none of those events are what we should focus on here. What is important to this section is the day she found two orphans in the aftermath of a terrible battle led by an unknown force that devastated a village. Bellemere found a three-year-old girl wandering around clutching a baby just barely over a year old. Bellemere asked the girl if the baby was her sister and she replied no. Amidst all the death and destruction surrounding the three of them, the little baby was laughing. Bellemere decided to take the girls with her and return to Kokoyashi village, leaving her life as a Marine behind.
The night they made it back to the village, a terrible storm was not making their rising fevers any better. On the verge of death they reached the village and were immediately given care and attention by the village doctor. After a short time the three weathered females recovered completely but an official village spokesman, Genzo, came to talk with Bellemere about relinquishing the children. He suggested that she hand them over to the government, but Bellemere refused to do that. She wanted to keep the children and raise them on her own, molding them into women that could stand up on their own in a troubled world. Much to the chagrin of the village, Bellemere kept the children and never officially registered them as citizens. Whether the names Nojiko and Nami were given to them by Bellemere or not, that is what the two young girls were called, Nojiko the older girl and Nami the baby.
And so the girls grew up, raised on the outskirts of Kokoyashi village under the wing of the chain-smoking, orange-tree-growing, iron-willed woman Bellemere. Nojiko and Nami, although good children at heart, were always stealing items from the village. Nami in particular had a passion for studying navigation and cartography so she stole books on said topics. By the age of ten, she often proudly exclaimed that her greatest ambition was to make a detailed map of the entire world by herself. Unfortunately for her, Nami was not as skilled as her big “sister” in shop-lifting was often caught by Genzo. Genzo loved little Nami, but he reprimanded her with a sharp tongue. Whenever he hauled her in, he would lecture (or attempt to at least) Bellemere on how to raise her “daughters” but she never listened and usually ended up embarrassing Genzo away by offering “herself” to make up for the trouble.

The truth was, Bellemere was very poor and wanted more than anything to give her adopted children good lives. Nami and Nojiko began to notice that Bellemere never ate food with them anymore and survived off of oranges. Although young, the two girls realized that Bellemere was sacrificing eating normal food so that the two of them could eat well. When they confronted her about it, she laughed it off and told them she was on an orange diet, but the yellowing of her skin told them different. Nami grew angry with her “mom” and told her that she would be better off without raising the two of them. Bellemere grew furious at her remarks then smacked Nami and kicked her out of the house, screaming that she never wanted to see her again. Nojiko remained and calmed down her “mom”, but Bellemere realized, even as she was saying them, that her words were not true and her actions wrong. In order to make up for her mistake, she began to cook a great feast for the three of them using a significant portion of money she had saved up. She asked Nojiko to go out and bring her back.
Nami walked to the center of Kokoyashi village and met with Genzo. She explained to him what had just transpired and told him that she had run away from home because Bellemere would be better off without her. Genzo listened intently to her and then related the true events of how she had been found by Bellemere. To that point, Nami had been told she was found underneath a bridge. The story made Nami realize just how much her “mother” really loved her and just as he finished speaking, Nojiko showed up and asked her to come home. Genzo sent the little girl off and just when everything seemed perfect, when it appeared that the argument’s wounds had been set to heal, a cry went out from the village people, “PIRAAAAAAATES!”
Arlong, a Sawfish-type Fishman who answered directly to the greatest and most powerful Fishman, Jinbeh had recently been rumored to have left Grand Line with his sights set on conquering East Blue. Evidently the rumor was true. He and his crew landed at Kokoyashi village with the intent of setting up their base of operations there. Arlong announced his presence to the town and began to do some fund-raising for his goal. His deal ran as follows: anyone wishing to live had to pay Arlong to spare his or her life. Adults’ lives cost 100,000 Belly and children’s were 50,000 Belly each. Arlong was giving the village what he saw as a generous and fair deal since he arrived without warning. Somehow the village exhausted all of their resources and managed to amass exactly 25 Million Belly, just enough for every man, woman and child living in the village…except for three, a poor family that lived on the outskirts of town.
Genzo hoped that the house was far enough away that Arlong and his crew would miss it, but at that moment, Bellemere was cooking her special dinner for Nami and Nojiko. A member of Arlong’s crew spotted smoke rising from a chimney located away from the village. Arlong headed for the house, while at the same time, Nami and Nojiko, who had been hiding from the pirates and so far had escaped detection, ran towards the house to warn Bellemere. The Fishman beat them to the house and waltzed inside, only to be kicked in the face, sending him falling backwards, Bellemere landing on him and stuck a shotgun in his face. Hey, she was a Marine ya know. But little good that would do against a Fishman like Arlong. He opened his mouth, tore off the muzzle of the gun with his jaws and began to beat Bellemere. Meanwhile Nami and Nojiko reached the house from the backside and planned to go in and grab Bellemere. Just before they could get inside, the village doctor barred their path and pleaded with them to remain silent and hidden behind the house.
In the front yard, Arlong had beaten Bellemere beyond any capable fighting and crushed her left arm with his foot. Bellemere realized that it was useless to fight and decided to use her hidden savings of 100,000 Belly to pay. Arlong’s Fishman Kuroobi confirmed that village documents had the woman listed as living alone. Behind the house, the doctor told the girls that they need to run away in order to live and protect their “mother”. Although it was a difficult decision, Nojiko finally agreed and began to leave. Meanwhile Bellemere paid the 100,000 Belly but as Arlong and his gang began to head back, the woman declared that the money was to pay for her two daughters. Stunned, Arlong inquired what she meant, and she confessed that she has two daughters. It would have hurt her more than anything to lie that she did not have a family. At she finished saying that, Nojiko and Nami rushed towards the front of the house and tearfully clutched onto their mother. Bellemere held them close and told them how much she wanted to buy them everything they ever wanted. Nami was overflowing with tears and told her that all her material wishes and desires were not really true, all she wanted was to stay with her forever.
Bellemere left the girls and stood to face Arlong. She confirmed that her daughters would be safe since she had paid the money. The monster agreed and with that he pointed his gun at her head. Bellemere’s last words were, “Nojiko! Nami! I love you.” And Arlong pulled the trigger three times.
Upon scouring Bellemere’s house, Arlong’s sword fighter, Hacchan, discovered an impressive collection of maps and notes on cartography. When he found out that it was the work of the little girl, Arlong decided to “borrow” her and make her a member of his gang. A short while later, Nami reappeared in the village, trembling, but smiling. Arlong had employed her as his cartographer. Genzo couldn’t believe that she agreed to such a position but he and everyone present believed it when they saw a sawfish tattoo on her arm, the symbol of Arlong. She cried and told everyone that she was being paid for her work, but they rejected her and exiled her from the village. Later, alone with Nojiko, Nami told her the truth. She made a deal with Arlong, for 100,000,000 Belly, she could buy back Kokoyashi village from him. And so she temporarily put her dream of mapping the world on hold and worked for the demon she hated the most with a smile on her face, all the while holding close to her heart the goal of gathering 100 Million Belly by any means necessary.
Notes on Nami:
Nami is technically the second person to join Luffy’s crew and first female member.
Her birthday, July 3rd, is a little play on Japanese words. ‘NAna’ means 7 and ‘MI’ can be used to mean 3.
Nami’s weapon is at first a normal staff, but later, Usopp creates the Clima Tact for her. A weapon that uses weather as a means of attacking, among other functions…
Nami’s real parents, her real hometown, and the force that destroyed her village is unknown. In fact, her birth parents may still be alive.
Nami has a limited knowledge of medicine, but her skills are not much beyond common sense for sea-faring illnesses.
Nami is the second-most intelligent member of the crew thus far. Chopper may be a doctor, but he is still young and does not know much of the world. Nami is simply a realistic person and has plenty of common sense. I would hope so, she’s the only person who can guide the ship! (God forbid Luffy or Zoro ever tried to do that)
After certain events transpire, Nami replaces her goal of obtaining 100 Million Belly with her original goal, mapping the world. But that doesn’t mean she plans on putting a stop to getting her hands on as much Belly as possible.
Nami appears to have an excellent knowledge of atmospheric conditions and how storms, tornados, and so on, are created. I say this only because it would appear that all the other crewmembers have no idea about that kind of thing, except for maybe Usopp and the second female crew member.
According to Oda, Nami resembles a cat.
Although perhaps not something to be proud of, Nami is the fourth greatest liar in One Piece.
As a creative way of making money, Nami is happy to lend her personal funds to anyone…at 300% interest.
The first map Nami plotted was the island Kokoyashi village is on.
She is commonly called a Demon Woman, which is a result of her unpredictable behavior when angered not to mention her sneaky tricks.
Nami's Three-Sizes (In Sanji’s Opinion):
Bust-86cm
Waist-57cm
Hip-86cm
Nami has superior fashion sense and I dare say even the second female crew member cannot rival her (but do not quote me on that, it has not been officially confirmed by Oda). She has a number of stunning outfits in the following styles:
Casual
Conservative
Dress-to-Kill
Strengths and Weaknesses
Nami is adept at using her womanly “gifts” as a weapon of sorts, or at the very least a means to an end. She follows the example set by Bellemere whenever she mentions how hot it is or asks amorous fellows to turn around while she changes. She takes advantage of Sanji far too often that way.
Unfortunately she is the physically weakest member of the crew and that is her biggest weakness…obviously. She usually stays out of battle but when she needs to fight she will resort to using the Clima Tact. Sometimes she even receives unexpected assistance.

Nami's Special Attacks
Impact Dial
A special dial given to Nami by Gan Forr that absorbs energy and releases it when it is pushed in. It is not known whether she will keep it. Whenever she uses it, her arm takes a lot of stress.
The Clima Tact
Around the same time he was working on his Usopp Hammer Special Edition, Nami asked Usopp to construct a new weapon for her. Well, somehow he managed to do it. The result, a three-part rod composed of tacts that can devastate any enemy
IF USED PROPERLY!!!!!!!!!!
Notes from Usopp on using the Clima Tact:

Reverse Side
Nami’s Own Attacks with the Clima Tact
Although Usopp did a fine job creating the Clima Tact…sort of…Nami managed to find uses for it that Usopp didn’t even intend to be present. By experimenting with the device, armed with knowledge of how storm systems and other wonders of weather occur, Nami found some excellent offensive and defensive uses for the weapon. Just a note, Tempo means "weather" in Italian.
Sprinkler
A variation of Rain = Tempo, Nami simply spins around like a sprinkler, putting lots of moisture in the air. This is a key step in using the…
Thunderbolt = Tempo
A complex, but extremely useful offensive attack, the Thunderbolt = Tempo has a three-step preparation process:
Step 1.
Using the “Sprinkler” Nami loads her surroundings with moisture.
Step 2.
Then Nami uses a Cool Ball. She follows that with a Heat Ball. The Heat Ball sucks up the moisture and when the falling Cool Ball collides with the warm moisture it cools off rapidly and becomes a tiny cloud! To create a larger cloud, Nami fires a rapid succession of Cool and Heat Balls.
Step 3.
Finally Nami launches a Thunder Ball into the cloud and the result has a “shocking” effect.
Cool Ball Mirage
Using the Cool Ball, Nami can create false images. The cold temperature causes a change in air density and refracts light.
Fog = Tempo
Nami needs an open flame in order to do this confusing skill. So long as the air around the flame is extremely moist, if Nami unleashes Cool Balls the cool air passing over the flame will freeze the moisture, creating a thick fog which she can use to escape or attack unseen.

History of Usopp
There once was a man who lived in Shiropp Village. This man was known for his marksmanship and there was no target he couldn’t hit. One day, this man felt the pirate flag calling him, even though he had a wife, Baquina, and young son, he left his life behind him and went out to sea in order to become a pirate. The man’s name was Yasopp and his son, a boy almost too young to remember his father, was named Usopp.
Time went by and eventually Usopp’s mother became gravely ill. Usopp was deeply hurt by his mother’s suffering and wanted to do anything to help her regain her strength. As she lay on her death bed, Usopp ran through the village screaming that pirates were coming. Finally he burst into his mother’s room and excitedly announced that his father had returned to see her and take them with him. His mother knew that he was lying, but she told him how proud she was of her husband, as well as of her son. Usopp told her of great herbs that were across the ocean that could cure any illness but still she told him not to dream. In his grief, Usopp continued to go on about pirates, wishing that his father would return to see him. Usopp became known for telling lies, but his lies are all dreams that he wishes to fulfill.
When Usopp grew older, he told stories about pirates, monsters and adventures to three youngsters of the village, Piman, Ninjin and Tamanegi. Usopp was a master with a slingshot and after showing them his amazing abilities they called him their captain. At age 12, Usopp became Captain Usopp of the Usopp Pirate Crew with his three loyal (and might I mention four-year-old) crew members.
Each day they would go on new adventures and almost daily, Usopp would bolt through the village at 7 AM screaming the arrival of a crew of pirates from the sea. Their adventures continued as normal until around when Usopp turned 16. A young girl whose parents were quite wealthy tragically lost both of them to illness. The girl, Kaya, became quite ill and sickly herself. Usopp would go visit her at her mansion each day to tell her tall tales and funny stories about adventures he had been on to cheer her up. This continued for a year until the day a ship flying the flag of Buggy The Clown docked near the village and changed Usopp’s life forever.
Notes on Usopp
Usopp’s goal is to become a great pirate captain with a crew of 80 million to make his father proud. If you couldn’t tell, Usopp’s shining quality is his pride in his father.
Usopp believes in following your dreams and making them a reality, whether he knows it or not, that is exactly what he is doing along the way as a member of Luffy’s crew.

Usopp’s name is a pun on the Japanese word ‘uso’ meaning a lie. This is suitable for him since he is known for his tricks and lies. You also might find his nose quite odd, but that is probably a reference to Pinocchio and the lies he would tell that caused his nose to grow. One might also consider that it is a reference to Japanese demons known as Tengu that could play cruel or mischievous tricks on humans. A Tengu leader was known for its prolonged snout.
According to Oda, Usopp is most like an armadillo.
Although this is fairly obvious, Usopp’s birthday is April 1st, which is April Fool’s day.
As you may have guessed, Usopp is the greatest liar in the series, and also runs away the fastest.
When he saw Dorry and Brogy duel on Little Garden, Usopp was inspired and realized that to be able to fight like them, “Valiant Warriors of the Sea”, with pride as their treasure is the way he wanted to be. Usopp wants to see their homeland, the land of giants, Erbaf.
As the most dexterous member of the crew, Usopp creates weapons, like the Clima Tact for Nami, and makes repairs on the ship. It would seem, later in the series, when the poor Going Merry is reduced to a few boards stuck together by a handful of nails, Usopp does nothing but serve as a repairman.
Usopp increases his sight with special goggles. He purchased an upgraded pair in Logue Town, but the actual scene of him purchasing them was cut out.
The Top 5 Most Gullible Characters
(In Usopp’s Opinion)
1. Chopper- Growing up as a reindeer, there is very little Chopper knows about the world. He believes most of what he hears whether it is reasonable or not.
2. Luffy- This nimitz draws conclusions by only half-listening to people’s stories. Most of his gullibility is do to his own hyper-active imagination.
3. Sir Crocodile- Sanji pulled one over on Croc when he impersonated Mr. 3 and then switched roles with Chopper as the elusive Mr. Prince. Croc truly screwed himself over big time.
4. Kaya- Usopp often told Kaya tall-tales about the world to cheer her up. Sometimes she genuinely seemed to believe him, while sometimes she just laughed at them.
5. Jango- This fellow’s head always seems to be elsewhere. Perhaps he hit it too hard after hypnotizing himself one too many times. Jango earnestly believed that Usopp had a force of eighty million pirates behind him.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Usopp often relies on his ability to lie during a confrontation in order to win. For instance, he sometimes calls out the name of an attack before he does it, like what he’ll shoot from his slingshot. After a while his enemies adjust to his techniques and Usopp will call out his attack, but do something completely different to catch them off-guard. This works surprisingly well. Sometimes, if his opponent is truly gullible, like Jango, his far-fetched lies work well too.
In addition to lying, Usopp also utilizes trickery and deception to delay his opponents. His supposedly 5 ton “Usopp Hammer Special Edition” is an example of such mischievous maneuvers. What Usopp lacks in strength, he makes up for by using his surroundings and gadgets that he creates to his advantage.
Usopp has dead-aim with projectile devices. A simple slingshot combined with his ingenuity and marksmanship becomes a deadly weapon. On the ship Usopp can hit any target perfectly, and that isn’t a lie! He is as good as he says he is.
Usopp’s downfall is…to be honest it is hard to find a weakness for Usopp, if anything it is the unfortunate reality that he is not physically powerful. His pride in his heritage does not allow him to back down from a fight when it really matters, he isn’t willing to let innocent people suffer and his unbreakable spirit allows him to win over his opponents.

History of Sanji
At the tender age of ten, Sanji was an energetic apprentice cook aboard the passenger ship Orbit. Sanji’s aspiration was to find a sea spoken of in legends known as All Blue. It was a hidden sea, the location of which, was a mystery and no known existing texts made mention of it. Some dismissed it as rumor, others like Sanji believed in it. In All Blue, fish and sea creatures from the four oceans of the world, East Blue, West Blue, North Blue & South Blue all live together. It is a cook’s greatest dream to have such a resource at one’s disposal, a veritable treasure chest for chefs. And so that became Sanji’s dream.
As these things often go, Sanji’s dreams were big, but his age and inexperience at sea was proof of his novice status as a cook. He couldn’t stand the thought of eating the leftovers from passenger’s dinner plates, but the other cooks all gobbled it up. They warned him that living at sea was unpredictable and things could change at any moment. And on one stormy evening, things did change.
Red-Leg Zeff and his crew, The Cook Pirates, seized the Orbit. Having recently returned from the Grand Line, Zeff and his crew of culinary culprits were looking for some booty. Zeff did not hold back his men as they stripped the passengers of their valuables, but he saw one of his men dump a suspicious-looking bag on deck and investigated. It turned out his man had lifted some food from the ship. Zeff was unforgiving as he kicked his own crewmember across the deck of the ship with his namesake, his powerful right leg. Zeff warned his men never to deprive others of their food, and he would not tolerate any exceptions to the rule.
Elsewhere on deck, Sanji was creating a stir by wielding two carving knives and attempting to fight back against the pirates. Despite the pleas of his superiors, the cooks, and the passengers, Sanji would not back down. He caught Zeff’s attention and the pirate effortlessly launched him to the other side of the deck with his knee. Zeff turned to leave but Sanji mustered all of his strength and bit the pirate’s ankle declaring that he would not die on the ship and he would find All Blue. The pirates laughed at his words and the cooks were embarrassed to hear him talk about a fantasy, Zeff remained silent. Again Zeff kicked the boy away without so much as a word. Although he was bleeding badly, Sanji once again vowed not to be killed by the pirates. Meanwhile Zeff’s men begged him to hurry and leave as the storm was quickly growing deadly. Just as he was about to board his own ship a tremendous wave hit the deck and washed Sanji overboard. Zeff leapt into the air and kicked off the top of the Orbit’s mast and fell with it near where Sanji had gone over. The pirates called out for their captain, but their voices were droned out by the gargantuan tidal wave that consumed and sunk both the Orbit and the pirate ship of Red-Leg Zeff.

Two days later, Sanji awoke. He was still alive, and it was a fair-weather day, before him he saw Red-Leg Zeff seated on the edge of a cliff. Instinctively Sanji tried to move but couldn’t budge, after all, a pirate known for his “red leg” had kicked him twice. Zeff cut no corners and let Sanji know what kind of situation he was in. There was no food beyond what had washed up on top of the barren rock they were stranded on in the middle of the ocean. Access to the water (which would have been useful for fishing) was out of the question because the surrounding waves’ erosion had made it such that jumping down would be safe, but climbing up would be impossible. Their only rations were in two bags. Sanji was furious with the old man for putting them in that position to begin with by attacking the ship. Zeff was unmoved by Sanji’s verbal assault but to make up for it, he gave Sanji the smaller of two bags of rations which contained five day’s worth of full meals. Sanji was plenty ticked off that the pirate had a larger bag of rations, but Zeff justified that by virtue of him being an adult with a larger stomach. The old man then got up and began walking away, he announced that he was moving to the other side of the rock to search for ships. He suggested that Sanji should not attempt to make any contact with him or move around at all in order to conserve strength and energy. But should he see a ship, he should get Zeff’s attention immediately. And so Zeff left the boy alone and their struggle for survival began.
Sanji began by running the odds of rescue through his head and formed a meal plan. He rationalized that a search party ship might appear in 4-5 days. Just to be on the safe side, he would divide his five day’s worth of food into 20 day’s worth, eating just less than a meal a day. He also noticed that rain-water collected in sunken areas of the rock he was on, so drinking would not be a big problem. Sanji was sure he would be just fine.
On the fifth day, torrential rains plagued Sanji and in a cruel twist of fate, a ship passed by on that very day. His voice droned out by the storm, Sanji tried in earnest to create a fire using wood from the wreckage, but it came to no avail. The rains had completely soaked everything and the ship passed before his eyes.
On the 25th day Sanji was down to his final piece of moldy bread. He cried as he remembered the cooks he worked with, eating up the leftovers from the customers. Now he knew first-hand why they did such a thing, “just in case”.
On the 30th day it was all he could do to look out on the sea and keep telling himself someone was coming.
On the 50th day he could not even encourage himself as he looked out to sea while rain poured.
On the 70th day he was just the shell of a human. Sanji finally combined his delusion and anger, with knife in hand he ventured over to Zeff’s side to kill him and take his food. Zeff heard him coming and asked if he had seen a ship. Sanji saw his bag full of food and eyed it hungrily. He announced that he had come to kill Zeff and steal his food. He plunged the knife into the ration bag and tore it open. Piece after piece of golden treasures fell out of the hole he made in the bag, there was no food inside. Zeff commented on the irony, he had all the money he needed and no food to buy. Sanji couldn’t understand what was happening. If Zeff had no food, then how had he survived? He grabbed the shriveled old man and fell back when he saw his body. His right leg was missing. Suddenly the reality of what had occurred hit him, the old man had cut off and eaten his own leg to survive.
From the very start Zeff gave the young cook all the food he had. Showing more energy than he had in days Sanji was in tears begging to know why the old man did it since he himself had never been kind to him. Zeff explained that it was because they both shared the same dream, to find All Blue. He wanted Sanji to accomplish what he in a year of searching the Grand Line could not, locating the mysterious ocean. He reassured the boy that the Grand Line was like a different world and such a sea could exist there.
As if he were speaking his last words, the old man talked of a new dream he had to restart his life by creating a portable restaurant, a sea-faring dining hall that could help out people just like him and the boy. Sanji cried and vowed to help make his dream a reality so long as he did not die. The former pirate captain laughed at Sanji’s words and told him he was to weak to do such a thing. Sanji promised him he would get stronger.
On the 85th day, sailors who had by chance spotted them picked up the one-legged old man, the young boy in a cook’s outfit. The man and boy were unconscious, but still breathing and clinging to life. Time passed and they made a full recovery. Zeff used all of the money he had left to build the floating restaurant he called the Baratie Restaurant. His Assistant Head Chef was Sanji, a boy destined to follow in his trainer’s footsteps as a great chef and to become a man with the strongest kick in East Blue.
Notes on Sanji
Like Nami, Sanji’s birthday is another whimsical play on words and number. “SAN” meaning three and “JI” which can refer to the “second” (2nd) of something for example a second-born son or daughter. And there's your 3/2. Clever Oda.
Sanji’s curly right eyebrow is supposedly one of the seven great mysteries of One Piece, according to what Oda sensei said in an SBS, (which means he could have completely made that up to be weird).
If Zoro is the series’ resident badass, then Sanji is the staple cool-as-ice lady’s man. Unlike most sweet-talkers, Sanji really is incredibly attractive, fairly intelligent and has a level head…unless it involves women.
According to Oda in an SBS, Sanji "has" 930 Maerchen Ero Ero's......WHATEVER THE BLOODY HELL THAT MEANS (Note: "ero" is a way to infer something sexy or erotic)
Sanji has the power to destroy 21 wooden baseball bats with one kick. You guessed it. This figure came from an SBS.
Sanji wears a jacket in Drum that has "59" embroidered on his right shoulder (Vol17 pg60) and a T-shirt with the numbers printed on it in some color spreads. That may be be a play on the Japanese pronunciation of 'cook'. 'GO' for 5 may be warped to 'KO', add to that 'KUU' for 9 and you've got 'KOKU'. Now stretch that consonant and you've got 'KOKKU' or cook in Japanese. Yay.
Sanji has an odd habit of calling Nami “Nami san” and Robin “Robin chan” even though their ages would require the reverse of that.
According to Oda, Sanji most resembles a duck.
Sanji smokes...a lot. There are few times he isn’t seen with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. Next to his eyebrow and chin stubble, it is a defining characteristic of his.
Because of his ordeal at sea, Sanji will never ever refuse giving food to anyone that is hungry, regardless of their reputation, lack of funds or social standing.
You may notice that Sanji is famous for his kicks; he does not use his hands in combat. Naturally that is because he is a chef that was taught by Red-Leg Zeff! What could possibly be more important to a chef than his own two hands? He does not wish to risk injury to them.
Even though Sanji is crazy about ladies, he is also a gentleman. He will not allow insult or injury to any woman in his presence while he can still stand.
Sanji’s attacks are all named in French. Although his attacks do have kanji, what he actually says is written in katakana. This makes it extremely difficult to figure out what the heck he is saying since it is another language’s variation of another language that I don’t speak at all.
For some reason, Sanji uses the word “shit” a lot. The pirates who he worked with on the Baratie Restaurant all used “shit” to no end so he isn’t the only one. He ends up making a lot of interesting descriptions this way, the most famous of which is “Shitty Restaurant”.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Sanji’s greatest weakness is also his greatest strength, his mad desire and respect for women. It brings out the best, the worst, the strongest and the weakest in him, particularly his uncontrollable lust for Nami. It almost ends up being the death of him in a certain battle. He has no control over his infatuation with her and it is probably physically impossible for him to ever harm her or let anyone attempt to do so while he is still able to stand. Which is why this is also his strength, if someone involves a woman in a conflict that cannot defend herself, Sanji will pull out the big guns. To a lesser extent he also lusts after the other female crew member, but his obsession with her is not nearly as sick.

Today's Menu of Attacks
Our chef Sanji is serving a wide variety of attacks today that are sure to leave his enemy's bodies writhing in pain. For our translator Greg's inconvenience, Sanji has named majority of his attacks in French, a language Greg does not speak a word of. However, he has kindly provided a kanji equivalent name as well. If this is your first time here, you may not know that our chef's attacks all represent which part of the body he will be attacking, and by the way, all of Sanji's attacks are in the form of a kick. When you select an attack that you would like, Sanji will be out to demonstrate on you, I mean for you.

*Akuma no Mi (Devil’s Fruit): Hito Hito no Mi
A Zoan-Family type of Devil’s fruit that allows Chopper to transform into a human-like state.
History of Chopper
The people of Drum Kingdom were living every day in fear. Years of tyranny under the cruel king Wapol had reduced them to begging their liege for help in all medical matters. Drum Kingdom of Drum Island was often recognized as an epicenter of superior medical skills. What no one outside the island knew was that Wapol had a monopoly on the doctors living in the kingdom. Since the island was a winter-type island, it was covered by snow at all times. Citizens were often caught in avalanches, snow-drifts, has severe colds and the kind of serious medical dilemmas one might expect to show up in artic-like conditions. Doctors are so very important in places such as that, and Wapol was fully aware of that which is why he took advantage of the situation and collected all the doctors of the kingdom for himself. Any doctors who refused to join him were chased away or killed. He called his army of doctors the Isshi~ 20 (“The 20 Docs”).
The doctors were given residence in Wapol’s castle where they continued their research or waited to be dispatched by Wapol. Citizens of the island could only receive medical attention if they groveled at Wapol’s feet and begged for his help, it is also likely that he accepted bribes. In this way, Wapol ruled the people by instilling a certain amount of fear and respect for himself in his subjects. But Wapol had not successfully gathered all of the doctors. Two so-called doctors remained, hunted by Wapol’s guard, but always avoiding capture, Dr. Kureha the Master Doctrine and the Quack Dr. Hiruruk. Dr. Kureha was a woman often regarded as a witch because of her extremely old age of 133 years and uncanny medicinal and surgical skills. The only catch to Dr. Kureha was her “unique” methods. She only came to offer her services when they were absolutely necessary and her asking price for services rendered were usually extreme. Compared to her, the Isshi~ 20 were still the best option.
And then of course there was “Doctor” Hiruruk. This self-proclaimed “doctor” was more of a menace than an aid to the innocent people of Drum Kingdom. For reasons unknown to the villagers, Hiruruk tried always in vain to save the sick and physically ailing. He ended up killing people, not saving them by administering the wrong treatments. People would beg him to leave them alone but he would persistently slip through their chimneys and try to treat them. It often took Wapol’s guards to chase him out of town.
One night while returning to his hidden cave dwelling, Hiruruk came upon a figure lying in the snow drenched in blood. The doctor bent over the large body and realized that is was the Yeti villagers had recently reported sightings of. It appeared that they had shot him multiple times and he was on the verge of death. Hiruruk spoke kind words to the beast and offered to help him but the monster saw Hiruruk’s tranquilizer gun and beat him into the ground. As the beast crawled painfully away, Dr. Hiruruk managed to get up and completely removed all of his clothes. He stood naked in the freezing snow, raised his hands above his head and called out to the creature, promising not to harm him because he was a doctor. For whatever reason the creature trusted him and accompanied Dr. Hiruruk back to his home. The creature miraculously changed into a smaller humanoid version of himself and it became clear that he was really a reindeer! The
Reindeer said nothing for three days but listened intently to all that Dr. Hiruruk had to say, while graciously accepting Hiruruk’s aid in his recovery. Finally, to Hiruruk’s surprise, the reindeer began to speak. Hiruruk named the reindeer Chopper Tony-Tony because his antlers looked like they could chop down trees.
Chopper related the story to Hiruruk how he was treated as an outcast within his herd because of his unique blue nose. One day while searching for food, he devoured a strange fruit. He suddenly found that he had the ability to change into a Man Beast, a Beast Man or return to his normal self as a Beast. The strange fruit he ate was the Hito Hito Fruit, a member of the Zoan-Family Devil’s Fruits that gave whatever ate it the ability to become human-like. Because of his strange abilities, the herd turned on him completely and beat him, forcing him to leave them. Then when Chopper attempted to contact humans, they shot and hunted him. Hiruruk was the first person ever to accept and care for the young reindeer.
Chopper continued to live and work with Hiruruk, learning about what it meant to be a doctor and about the rest of the world. Hiruruk’s symbol that motivated him to work towards his goal was a pirate flag with falling sakura blossoms decorating it. Hiruruk taught Chopper that the skull and cross-bones were a symbol of faith and his reason to live.
For one year Chopper stayed with Hiruruk and at the end of that year Hiruruk congratulated Chopper on his full recovery but asked him to leave. Chopper begged the doctor not to force him away, he even injured his forehead on purpose and pleaded for medical help but Hiruruk pulled out his gun and fired on Chopper, driving him away from his abode. When Hiruruk closed to door of his cavern behind him, he burst into tears. His cruelty was all an act, he couldn’t bear to let Chopper see him, when he was on the verge of death.
Chopper concealed himself near the doctor’s home and observed him carefully. He saw his friend leave the house and followed him to the tree house of Dr. Kureha. Hanging from a window, Chopper listened in on the conversation between the two and was shocked to find out that his best friend was dying of a terrible and incurable disease. Chopper realized why Hiruruk acted so cruelly and decided to take matters into his own hands to save his only friend. Recently Wapol’s guards had spread rumors of a miraculous mushroom that was located somewhere on Drum Island and could cure any disease. Chopper secretly went through volume after volume of Hiruruk’s medical books to find such a mushroom and finally identified it beyond a doubt.
Chopper set out to find the mushroom by himself but was accosted along the way by his old herd. They beat and tore at him, but he fought back and kept searching for the mushroom to save his friend. Meanwhile, the Isshi~ 20 had all come down with an unknown illness and were not seeing any patients. With a kingdom of sick people that needed care, Dr. Hiruruk knew that his time was running out and he had to find the last piece of the puzzle to create his miracle cure. His goal was to save the Isshi~ 20. It was up to him to find the panacea that would save a country before he died.
One week later, Chopper appeared at the doctor’s door, his body was bruised, bloody, broken and over-exposed to the elements, but he held in his hand the miracle mushroom. Despite his dire situation Hiruruk could not pretend he did not love Chopper as a son. He quickly made a soup of the mushroom and drank it heartily, feeling strength return to his body as he drank it, so he said. Just as he finished drinking the soup the last reaction he had set up began to glow. Hiruruk rushed to his experiment table and saw before him the reaction he had been searching for, for thirty years. The doctor hurriedly gathered several items and rushed out the door, before he left he told Chopper just to wait a few minutes and he would be back, he also told Chopper that he would become a great doctor someday.
After a while, Dr. Kureha burst into Hiruruk’s hide-out and almost scared Chopper to death. She demanded to know where Hiruruk was and Chopper told her that since he had been cured, Hiruruk headed to town in order to cure the sick patients. Kureha was puzzled by what the reindeer said about being “cured”. She reassured Chopper that no modern medicine could save the doctor. Chopper became frustrated and showed her a picture of the miracle mushroom he gathered for him. The doctrine was shocked beyond words, the “miracle” mushroom that Chopper gathered was no miraculous fungi, it was deadly and poisonous. Chopper refused to believe her and showed her the symbol of a skull and cross-bones next to the mushroom, the same symbol on the pirate flag that the doctor held high as a symbol of faith.
Kureha now understood the situation, the poor reindeer that knew so little of the world did not understand the skull and cross-bones meant poison. The doctrine turned cruel she was furious with the young creature. She told him that there was no medicine that could cure any disease, if there was, then doctors would not be necessary. Chopper thought of how happy Hiruruk looked when he saw him holding the deadly mushroom and understood then that the doctor had no intention of living very long anyway. With his last moments of life, he was going to town to reveal his miracle cure to the people. Without wasting a moment, Chopper raced towards the center of town to see Hiruruk.
Meanwhile, Hiruruk had reached Wapol’s castle at the center of the island and was prepared to unleash his miracle cure when he saw that Wapol, his guards and the Isshi~ 20 were all waiting for him. The story about the Isshi~ 20 being incapacitated by illness was made up to bring the doctor out of hiding so they could kill him. Hiruruk understood that he had been duped but was not concerned with that. He told the corrupt king that bullets, disease, or even poison cannot kill a person. A person only truly dies when they are forgotten. With that he filled a sake-drinking cup with an unknown liquid and declared that even if his body left the world, his dream would be fulfilled one day. He raised his cup, saluted his life and drank it all. After the last drop passed his lips, the doctor exploded just as Chopper reached the castle. Wapol laughed at Hiruruk’s death and Chopper could not hold back his rage as he charged the king, but was held back by the Drum Kingdom’s Armed Guard Leader, Dalton. Dalton was also fed up with the king’s crooked ways but ordered Chopper to cease his assault.
Filled with sadness, Chopper trudged back to the home of Dr. Kureha. He begged her to teach him how to be a doctor. His desire was to become the panacea that could cure people of any disease. Little did Chopper know that after saying goodbye for the last time, Hiruruk stopped at Kureha’s home before he headed to town. He did not explain anything to the doctrine but asked her to do him a favor and teach Chopper to be a doctor. She refused to do so at the time, but now that she understood why he asked and what a strong man he really was, Kureha changed her mind. She took Chopper in and began to teach him the ways of a doctor.
Notes on Chopper:
The Three Basic Forms of Chopper
After eating the Hito Hito Fruit, Chopper gained the ability to transform himself into human-like forms while retaining his original form as a reindeer. His basic forms are as follows:
Man Beast: Chopper appears as a large hairy man in this form. He has no antlers or hooves, but he still has his blue nose. This was the form he attempted to contact humans in.
Beast Man: This is Chopper’s standard form, as he is often seen this way, it would appear he is most comfortable in this state. Here he is more beast than man as he has his animal-like facial features, antlers and hooves. However, he walks upright like a human and his mouth is more similar to a human’s than a normal reindeer’s.
Beast: When traveling long distances, Chopper reverts to his true form as a reindeer. It is not often that he is seen in this state.
As of this writing, Chopper is the youngest member of the crew at 15-years-old. But that would not be hard to tell. Chopper may know his stuff when it comes to medicine, but there is very little he knows about the world. Commonplace locations, creatures or people fascinate him.
Chopper’s birthday is on December 24th. He also was born with a blue nose. Get it?
Chopper can understand what animals are saying. He can scout out help from members of the animal kingdom for Luffy and the crew.
According to Oda, Chopper most resembles....A REINDEER!
Chopper’s ambition is to see the world and to become a great doctor that can heal any ailment.
Borrowing an act from the famous Japanese comedian Shimura Ken, Chopper performs a dance when he is embarrassed that Ken’s character, Hen na Ojisan ‘Strange Old Man’, made popular, the “Hige Dance”.
Although he truly loves them, the little reindeer does not take compliments very well. If Chopper is praised for his skill or abilities, he shoves the recognition off by cursing out whoever complimented him. What gives him away is his inability to hide a huge gleeful smile whilst he utters a stream of obscenities and threats.
It would seem Chopper has some difficulty when it comes to maneuvering or positioning himself. Perhaps that is because he was not raised as a human. When running through forests in his Beast Man form, he often smacks directly into trees. He also has difficulty when trying to sneak around. Whenever he attempts to peak out from the edge of a corner, Chopper fully exposes his whole body by standing in the opposite direction!
Strengths and Weaknesses
Chopper’s shape-changing ability makes him an especially frustrating opponent to face, especially when one considers his additional forms and abilities when he downs a Rumble Ball. His size-changing abilities are especially useful and they can be utilized to dodge projectiles or other attacks. For example, if someone fired an object at his head while he was in his Man Beast form, by changing into his smaller Beast Man form, the object would fly harmlessly over his head.
Although recently Chopper proved himself to be a real pirate by standing up for himself alone against a worthy adversary, up to that point Chopper was afraid of fighting a difficult opponent when he was completely alone.
Going hand-in-hand with Chopper’s young age is his incredible gullibility. He believes ANYTHING he hears, even if it comes out of Usopp’s mouth. That combined with his lack of knowledge about the ways of the world sometimes get him into trouble.

Special Attacks
Rumble Ball
By eating a special type of stimulant Chopper designed by himself called the Rumble Ball the reindeer can utilize four more forms of transformation, while enhancing his original three. The only limitation is that the effects of the Rumble Ball only last for three minutes. After that time Chopper is again limited to his three basic forms. The forms and the abilities he can perform are listed here.

Suko~pu | Scope | Chessmaarimo, Mr. 4, Gedatsu | Vol.17 pg80. Vol.20 pg177. Vol.28 pg137. | This may only be used when Chopper is in Brain Point. He can focus on his enemy and find their weakness or formulate a strategy. |
Koku Tei Rozeo | Carving Hoof Roseo | Chessmaarimo. | Vol.17 pg84. | This may only be used when Chopper is in Arm Point. Chopper hits his opponent with a powerful punch, leaving the imprint on his hoof on his opponent. This imprint so happens to look like a sakura petal. The term 'roseo' is Italian for sakura, which is the actual kanji in the attack’s name. Also, if one reads 'koku tei' as 'kokutei', this means ‘National’. Sakura is the national flower of Japan and the final name of Drum Kingdom. |
Koku Tei Kurosu | Carving Hoof Cross | Gedatsu | Vol.28 pg141. | This may only be used when Chopper is in Arm Point. Chopper hits his opponent with his hooves “wrist to wrist”. This leaves the impression of a cross on his opponent. Following the same pattern as Koku Tei Roseo, the name of this attack could be interpreted as “The National Cross of Christ”. |
